On the remarkable nonlinear optical properties of natural tomato lycopene

Abstract: In line with the renewed interest in developing novel Non Linear Optical (NLO) materials, natural Lycopene’s NLO Properties are reported for the first time within the scientific literature. Correlated to its 1-D conjugated π-electrons linear conformation, it is shown that natural Lycopene exhibits a significantly elevated 3rd order nonlinearity χ(3) as high as 2.65 10−6 esu, the largest value of any investigated natural phyto-compound so far, including β-carotene. In addition to a saturable absorption, the cor… Show more

“…Noteworthily, lycopene and its derivatives exhibited fluorescence ability. Previous studies indicated that the irradiation band of lycopene was ∼415 nm. Then, we could conclude that one of the true characters of luminescence in oil–quartz crystals was lycopene at the least lower wavelength irradiation. On the other hand, a luminescence band of lycopene hardly coincided the irradiation band of 560 nm and fluorescence abilities of the detected molecules in the extracted oil samples.…”

“…Two grams of dried green tomatoes were placed in a 250 mL flask containing 200 mL of deionized water and then boiled in a 60º C water bath for 4 h. After filtering twice with filter paper Whatman no. 1, the aqueous green tomato extract was added to 100 mL of 1 M ZnO (Sangon Biotech Co., Ltd., Shanghai, China) directly to the installation ZnOnps [ 29 , 31 ]. The nanoparticles were centrifuged at 10,000 g for 20 min.…”

“…It takes part in the process of photosynthesis and protects plants from damage caused by overexposure to light. It is also an essential intermediate in the synthesis of beta-carotene and xanthophylls [4]. However, lycopene is also found in some plants that have other colors, such as parsley and asparagus [5].…”
