20 bacterial strains (corresponding to 16 species) were screened for ornithine lipids. Only two species (Thiobacillus A2 and Achromobacter sp.) turned out to contain ornithine lipids (2.71 mmol/100 g and 0.38 mmol/100 g bacterial dry weight, respectively). In both ornithine lipids, a 3‐hydroxy fatty acid was amide‐linked to the α‐amino group of ornithine, a normal fatty acid was ester‐linked to the 3‐hydroxy group of the former. The predominant fatty acids were 18:1(11) and 3‐hydroxy‐20:1(13) in Thiobacillus A2, 16:0 and 3‐hydroxy‐18:1(11) in Achromobacter sp. All monounsaturated fatty acids (with one exception) belonged to the (n‐7) family. 11, 12‐Epoxy octadecanoic acid was identified among the ester‐linked fatty acids of Thiobacillus A2. Phosphatidyl‐choline was the principal phospholipid in both bacterial species.

The isolation and characterization of an ornithine-containing lipid from various strains of Paracoccus denitrlJicans (grown heteretrophically and autotrophically) is reported. Bakterien sind als Prokaryonten von Eukaryonten morphologisch und physiologisch so verschieden, daO die Frage nach chemisch-strukturellen Unterschieden, so auch der Lipidmuster, berechtigt erscheint. Triglyceride fungieren bei Eukaryonten als energiereiche Speicherstoffe. Bei Prokaryonten gibt es ebenfalls lipide Speicherstoffe, aber meist von anderer Struktur. Amphipatische Lipide sind bei ProkaryontenebensoBestandteilevonMembranen wie bei Eukary0nten;jedochsind die LipidmusterinbeidenOrganismenreichen verschieden. An zihlreichen Beispielen wid gezeigt, wie Bakterien-Lipide als ,Marker" zurAufstellungeinesnatiirlichen Systems der Bakterien-Klassifikation niitzlich sein konnen.Bakterien sind ah Prokaryonten von Eukaryonten morphologisch und physiologisch so verschieden, daB es den Lipid-Chemiker reizt, nach Unterschieden auch in der Lipidzusammensetzung zu suchen.Die Lipide der Eukaryonten konnen, funktionell betrachtet, in drei Gruppen unterteilt werden: Speicherstoffe (Energietriiger), Baustoffe, Wirkstoffe.werden: Triglyceride als Speicherstoffe, amphipathische Lipide (vornehmlich Phospholipide) als Membranbestandteile, Steroid-Hormone als Wirkstoffe mit spezifscher Funktion.An einer Auswahl von Beispielen soll hier gezeigt werden, daf3 auch bei Prokaryonten diese drei Funktionen vertreten sind. Bei Prokaryonten kommt noch eine weitere Frage him: ob die An-oder Abwesenheit bestimmter Lipide fir bestimmte Species oder Gattungen charakteristisch sind, ob also auf Grund der Lipidmuster eine chemische Taxonomie moglich ist. Bei Eukaryonten konnen als Beispiele hiefir genannt L i p i d e a l s S p e i c h e r s t o f f e In vielen Bakterien-Species werden groBe Mengen von Poly-P-hydroxybuttersaure (PHBA) gespeichert. Diese ist ein Polyester der P-D-(-)-Hydroxybuttersaure (Abb. 1); sie weist dieselbe Konfiguration auf wie die bei der Ketogenese in hoheren Tieren gebildete P-Hydroxybuttersaure. Als Versuchsobjekt haben wir ein wasserstoff-oxidierendes Bakterium gewwt. Solche Bakterien konnen molekularen Wasserstoff mit einem Oxidationsmittel oxidieren, z. B. mit molekularem Sauerstoff. Die Bakterien leben praktisch von der Knallgas-Reaktion und heiBen daher auch KnallgasBakterien. Diese Organismen sind von Schlegelund Mitarb. ' intensiv studiert worden. Die Bakterien konnen in rein anorganischen Ntihrlosungen wachsen und C02 assimilieren; sie benutzen hierzu im Gegensatz zu phototrophen Organismen nicht Licht als Energiequelle, sondern einen exergonischen chemischen ProzeB, n W c h die Knallgas-Reaktion.
