Occurrence of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases in Members of the Genus Shigella in the Republic of Korea

Abstract: A nationwide survey was carried out in Korea to assess the prevalence of Shigella strains producing extended-spectrum ␤-lactamases (ESBLs). From 1991 to 2002, 5,911 clinical strains were isolated and screened for resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins. Twenty of the Shigella isolates were ESBL positive, based on the synergistic effects between clavulanate and selected ␤-lactams (ceftazidime and cefotaxime). Nucleotide sequence analysis of these isolates revealed that they harbored bla TEM-19 (eight iso… Show more

“…Since that time many strains of Shigella spp. harbouring different types of ESBLs have been reported in developed and developing countries in Asia (Cheung et al, 2005;Chuang et al, 2006;Kim et al, 2004;Pai et al, 2001;Rahman et al, 2004;Xiong et al, 2007). However, to the best of our knowledge this is the first report of ESBLproducing Shigella spp.…”

“…12 The ESBL positive donor strains were conjugated with the standard strain E. coli J53 (resistant to sodium azide) as a recipient cell. MacConkey agar containing 4 µg/mL of cefotaxime and 200 µg/mL of sodium azide was used as the selection medium.…”

“…These have the semblances of the results obtained by Kim et al (2004) in which plasmid presence and transfer of ESBL phenotype to E. coli was successful for all their 20 isolates. Also, as in ours, the electrophoresis of their plasmid DNA from wild-type Shigella spp.…”
