Occurrence of aflatoxin M1in milk and dairy products commercialized in Campinas, Brazil

Abstract: One hundred and fifty-two samples of pasteurized milk, powdered milk, cheese and yoghurt, marketed in Campinas, Brazil in 1989-1990, were analysed for aflatoxin M1 by the AOAC TLC method (visual quantitation) 980.21. Fifty-two pasteurized milk samples were also analysed in 1992 by the AOAC HPLC method 986.16. Aflatoxin M1 was not detected in the 1989-1990 samples. Four milk samples of the 1992 batch were contaminated at 73-370 ng/1. Except for the sample with 370 ng/l, which would have been also found positive… Show more

“…In the state of São Paulo, Martins and Martins (1986) observed four samples (1.8%) of pasteurised milk containing AFM 1 , with two of them containing 0.250 lg L À1 . Sabino, Purchio, and Zorzetto (1989) detected AFM 1 (0.200 lg L À1 ) in only one sample (1.0%) of pasteurised milk, whereas Sylos, Rodriguez-Amaya, and Carvalho (1996) observed four samples (7.7%) with AFM 1 levels above 0.050 lg L À1 (maximum of 0.370 lg L À1 ). Recently, Garrido, Iha, Santos, and Duarte (2003) observed 29 samples (20.9%) of pasteurised and UHT milk with AFM 1 at levels ranging from 0.050 to 0.240 lg L À1 .…”

“…Few surveys have been undertaken to assess the level of AFM 1 in some types of cheese consumed in Brazil (Table 2). Sylos et al (1996) detected no AFM 1 in cheese commercialized, in 1990, in Campinas/Brazil. However, the analytical method employed was a thin-layer chromatography which is less sensitive than high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).…”

“…In Brazil there are limited surveys for AFM 1 in milk (GARRIDO et al, 2003;OLIVEIRA et al, 1997OLIVEIRA et al, , 2006PARREIRAS & GOMES, 1987;PEREIRA et al, 2005;PRADO et al, 1999;SABINO et al, 1989;SOUZA et al, 1999;SYLOS et al, 1996;TAVEIRA & MÍDIO, 2001) and milk products as yoghurt and cheese (PRADO et al, 2000(PRADO et al, , 2001SYLOS et al, 1996). AFM 1 is relatively stable during pasteurization, sterilization, preparation, and storage of various dairy products (GALVANO et al, 1996;GÜRBAY et al, 2006;HASSANIN, 1994).…”
