Abstract: Resumo -A madeira da araucária (Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) O. Kuntze) teve grande importância econômica no Brasil, principalmente entre 1930 e 1970. O desmatamento ocasionou a redução drástica do tamanho populacional de araucária e atualmente ela integra a lista de espécies brasileiras ameaçadas de extinção. “…The species occurs mainly in the southern region, and can also be found in Paraguay and Argentina (Carvalho 2003), where it is widely used in the furniture industry (Gonçalves et al 2014). These characteristics and the high added value of its wood (Delucis et al 2013) were responsible for generating enormous exploitation of the species in the late nineteenth century (Danner et al 2012). The species is also attractive for its seeds, popularly called Brazilian pine nuts, considered an excellent source of starch, low calorific fibers and magnesium, plus its low glycemic index (Cordenunsi et al 2004).…”

“…The commercial exploitation of araucaria nuts is a viable and advantageous alternative, mainly with the aggregation of value on the product. Hence, it is a form of conservation of the species in a profitable and competitive way by reducing the illegal exploitation of remaining areas (Silveira et al, 2011;Zanette et al, 2011;Danner et al, 2012).…”
