Nutritional evaluation of sunflower-seed protein products

Abstract: Defatted sunflower-seed meal, sunflower-seed protein concentrate and protein isolate were fed to protein-depleted chicks. The effect of the enrichment of meal and of protein isolate with lysine, methionine, or a mixture of both on the nutritional value was investigated. Sunflower-seed protein products are primarily limited in lysine. Food consumption, weight gain and protein/efficiency ratio reveal superior performance of lysine- and methionine-enriched meal or protein isolate, as compared to the corresponding… Show more

“…On the other hand, sesame seed contains high amounts of oxalic acid, which is present mainly in the hulls; they also contain among the highest levels of phytates found in nature. Both oxalic acid and phytates reduces the biological availability of zinc, calcium, magnesium, and perhaps iron (Taha et al, 1989). In areas where sesame seed is consumed by humans, dehulling is necessary because the hulls contain large amounts of undesirable oxalic acid and indigestible fiber, which imparts dark color to the sesame products (Inyang and Nwadimkpa, 1992).…”

“…Therefore, unless the dietary energy density is Increased, the use of substantial amounts of sunflower meal in broiler diets may impair feed efficiency and in the instances of Inadequate MEn intakes, reduces growth rate (Taha et al, 1980;. Based on these reports from the literature, four experiments were designed to determine the metabolizable energy content of diets containing sunflower meal and to investigate the use of supplemental fat or diet pelleting on the nutritive value of broiler chicken diets containing sunflower meal.…”

“…The high fiber content of sunflower meal contributed, at least partly, to the growth depression of chicks since lysine supplementation did not overcome the adverse effects of sunflower meal diets on performance. In contrast, and Taha et al (1980) concluded that the adverse effects of including sunflower meal in the broiler diets could be totally overcome by lysine supplementation.…”
