Nutritional evaluation of high protein genotypes of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) leeke)

Abstract: Three high protein (HP) inbred lines (7001 12, WC-I 90 and B-816) of pearl millet were studied for their nutritional quality and the results compared with those of normal protein varieties. The protein content of H P lines showed an average increase of 60% but the starch and soluble sugars togerher and the far content decreased by 40 and 20%, respectively. Total dietary fibre of the H P lines was about 10% higher. A decrease (about 20%) in the albumin fraction was associated with an increase in prolamin in H P… Show more

“…In plants, SP are involved in osmotic adjustment (Nouck et al, 2016). They are stored as nitrogen under salt-stress and re-used when the stress is removed (Singh et al, 1987). PRO content in plants increased significantly under salt stress in all cultivars compared to untreated plants (Fig.…”

“…In plants, SP are involved in osmotic adjustment. They are stored as nitrogen under salt-stress and re-used when the stress is removed (Singh et al, 1987). When different abiotic stresses affect plant functionality, alterations in photosynthesis and carbon partitioning are common features that take place at organ level as well as in whole plant (Gill et al, 2003).…”

“…No high-lysine mutants have been identified yet in pearl millet, though they must exist. One pearl millet study has shown that it should be possible to select for increased protein without sacrificing grain yield (Kumar et al 1983), while another has identified genotypes with high protein content ranging from 14 to 19% (Singh et al 1987). At higher protein levels, the percentage of lysine in protein decreases, but in the grain sample it still increases.…”
