Nitrogen isotope analysis of ammonium in aqueous solutions using a perfluorosulfonated ionomer membrane for solid‐phase microextraction

Abstract: The use of custom-made solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers coated with a perfluorosulfonated ionomer, Nafion, was investigated for nitrogen isotopic analysis of ammonium in aqueous solutions. Aqueous ammonium was converted to ammonia by addition of a base, followed by absorption from the headspace, desorption in the injection port of a gas chromatograph, and analysis by gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS). Fibers coated with a Nafion tubing were chosen due to a highe… Show more

“…Two different approaches have been proposed for the nitrogen isotope analysis of ammonium in KCl soil extracts for which current methods require relatively large sample size (100 ml), removal of the matrix and preconcentration. Norlin et al 250 demonstrated the potential of combining headspace GC-combustion-SIRMS with SPME extraction using fibres coated with Nafion 1 (a perfluorosulfonated ionomer). The ammonium was converted to ammonia, absorbed from the headspace and injected into the GC.…”
