A new species of Moenkhausia is described from tributaries of the rio Paraguay, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed from congeners by characters related to body coloration, the number of lateral line scales, the degree of poring of the lateral line, and number of scales rows above and below the lateral line. Molecular analyses using partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase I from specimens of the new species and specimens belonging to morphologically similar species demonstrated that the new species is easily differentiated by their high genetic distance and by their position in the phylogenetic hypothesis obtained through the Maximum Parsimony methodology. The analyses of three samples of M. oligolepis also revealed that they have high genetic distances and belong to different monophyletic groups suggesting that this species corresponds to a species complex rather than a single species.Uma nova espécie de Moenkhausia é descrita de tributários do rio Paraguai, Brasil. Essa nova espécie é diagnosticada de seus congêneres por caracteres relacionados ao padrão de colorido do corpo, número de escamas da linha lateral, grau de desenvolvimento dos poros sensoriais na linha lateral e número de séries de escamas acima e abaixo da linha lateral. Um análise molecular usando sequências parciais do gene mitocondrial Citocromo Oxidase I de espécimes representativos da nova espécie e espécimes pertencentes a espécies morfologicamente similares demonstrou que a nova espécie é facilmente diferenciada por sua elevada distância genética e por sua posição na hipótese filogenética obtida pelo método de máxima parcimônia. A análise de três amostras de M. oligolepis também revelou que estas apresentam distâncias genéticas elevadas e pertencem a grupos monofiléticos distintos, sugerindo que esta espécie corresponda a um complexo de espécies e não uma única espécie.

Small headwaters streams of the Neotropical region usually have high species richness and diversity. This study aimed to investigate the species composition and abundance of fish fauna in the headwaters streams of the Madeira-Purus interfluvial plain in the Brazilian Amazon. A total of 22 streams of 1st to 3rd order were sampled during two expeditions at two separate locations in April-May and July of 2007. A total of 5508 fishes were captured using hand and small seine nets, belonging to 78 species, 22 families and six orders. Characiformes was the most diverse taxonomic group in the samples, followed by Gymnotiformes and Siluriformes. Our findings indicate that the fish fauna of streams in the Madeira- Purus interfluvial plain is both rich and diverse and should be considered during the implementation of strengthened environmental conservation strategies in this region.

A new species of Moenkhausia is described from the rio Arinos drainage, rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed from all congeners, except M. hemigrammoides, M. nigromarginata, and Moenkhausia rubra by having intense diffuse dark pigmentation on the dorsal and anal fin-rays. The new species can be distinguished from the above mentioned species by the combination of 20-23 branched anal-fin rays, presence of a vertically elongate roughly rectangular humeral spot surpassing the lateral line ventrally, absence of a well-defined black spot on the distal portion of the dorsal fin and lack of a series of longitudinal dark zigzag stripes on body. The new species is herein described along with a report and discussion of a possible connection between the rio Tapajós and rio Paraguay basins, near Diamantino Municipality, Mato Grosso. Uma espécie nova de Moenkhausia é descrita das drenagens do rio Arinos, bacia do rio Tapajós, Mato Grosso, Brasil. A nova espécie é diagnosticada de todas as congêneres, exceto M. hemigrammoides, M. nigromarginata, e Moenkhausia rubra por possuir pigmentação escura intensa e difusa nos raios das nadadeiras dorsal e anal. A nova espécie pode ser distinguida das espécies supracitadas pela combinação da presença de 20-23 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, presença de uma mancha umeral aproximadamente retangular, ultrapassando a linha lateral ventralmente, ausência de uma mancha negra conspícua na porção distal da nadadeira dorsal e pela ausência de uma série de linhas longitudinais negras em forma de zigue-zague no corpo. A nova espécie é aqui descrita, juntamente com o relato de uma possível conexão entre as bacias dos rios Tapajós e rio Paraguay, próximo ao município de Diamantino, Mato Grosso.
