In this study, new nano-fluor-hydroxyapatite (nFHA)/polyurethane composite scaffolds were fabricated for potential use in bone tissue engineering. Polyester urethane samples were synthesized from polycaprolactone, hexamethylene diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol as chain extender. Nano fluor-hydroxyapatite (nFHA) was successfully synthesized by sol-gel method. The solid–liquid phase separation and solvent sublimation methods were used for preparation of the porous composites. Mechanical properties, chemical structure, and morphological characteristics of the samples were investigated by compressive test, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, respectively. The effect of nFHA powder content on porosity and pore morphology was investigated. SEM images demonstrated that the scaffolds were constituted of interconnected and homogeneously distributed pores. The pore size of the scaffolds was in the range 50–250 μm. The result obtained in this research revealed that the porosity and pore average size decreased and compressive modulus increased with nFHA percentage. Considering morphological, physical, and mechanical properties, the scaffold with a higher ratio of nFHA has suitable potential use in tissue regeneration.

Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro (ma bamboo) was liquefied in phenol or in polyethylene glycol/glycerol cosolvent, with H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst. The liquefied bamboo was reacted with bisphenol-A and epichlorohydrin to prepare copolymer epoxy resins. The thermal properties of resins during and after curing were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results showed that a novel epoxy resin can be prepared by copolymerizing liquefied bamboo with bisphenol-A and epichlorohydrin in a two-step process. DSC analysis showed that the copolymer epoxy resins prepared with phenol-liquefied bamboo had a curing behavior similar to that of neat epoxy resin, even when 50% of the bisphenol-A was replaced with liquefied bamboo. However, the reactivity of copolymer epoxy resins prepared with polyhydric alcohol-liquefied bamboo decreased as the substitution amount of liquefied bamboo increased. DMA showed that the storage modulus and tan d of cured copolymer epoxy resins decreased as the amount of substituted liquefied bamboo increased.

Preparation of Polyester Using Waste Ethylene Glycol Generated from the Wastepaper Pretreatment Process

1) This research was to investigate the polyester preparation using waste ethylene glycol (EG) generated from the wastepaper pretreatment process. Waste EG was obtained from using EG five times repeatedly in the pretreatment of wastepaper. The hydroxyl value of the waste EG was 441 mg KOH/g and its composition was 0.68% cellulose, 6.5% hemicellulose, 6.1% lignin, and 86.7% EG. Maleic acid was used as carboxylic acid. The effect of reaction temperature and time except carboxyl group/hydroxyl group ratio on the crosslinkage of the prepared polyester was marginal. Citric acid, lithium hydroxide and dicumyl peroxide were used as additive or catalyst to enhance the crosslinkage of polyester. Among them, 10% of citric acid was found to be most effective. The crosslinkage was 86% when the polyester was prepared at an optimum condition such as 130℃ and 15 minutes, 1.5 of C/H ratio, and 10% of citric acid, and its insoluble percentage in boiling water for 6 hours was 47%. The weight loss of the prepared polyester was approximately 40% when it was buried in damp soil for 5 months, indicating that it is readily biodegradable. This results can provide some information for future development of wastepaper pretreatment by organic solvent.
