Natural prey of the lynx spider Oxyopes lineatus (Araneae: Oxyopidae)

Abstract: The natural prey of the lynx spider Oxyopes lineatus Latreille, 1806 was studied in a meadow in the subtropical zone of Azerbaijan. The percentage of specimens of O. lineatus found while feeding was low (4.3%). Spiders were observed feeding both day and night. The investigation has shown that O. lineatus is a polyphagous predator feeding on a wide range of arthropods, with representatives of nine arthropod orders found in its diet. The primary food of O. lineatus was Diptera, Hymenoptera, and Homoptera, which … Show more

“…was a generalist predator that can inhabit the soil surface and plant canopy so that it has a fairly high preying ability and a broad range of prey from several types of insects. Generalist predators have a wider chance to survive because they are able to eat various types of prey compared to specialist predators (Huseynov, 2007;Inayat et al, 2011;Rana et al, 2012).…”

“…It is known that alien goldenrod stands can be inhabited by a large number of polyphagous heteropterans, while specialized species are mostly absent (Roháčová and Drozd 2009). Although specialized herbivores might be missing, alien goldenrod still provides habitat for polyphagous insect species, which in turn serve as potential prey for spiders, as most species are opportunistic predators with a wide food niche (e.g., Foelix 2011;Huseynov 2007aHuseynov , b, 2008Nentwig 1986).…”
