Morphological spectrum of non-neoplastic lesions of the uterine cervix in Warri, South-South, Nigeria

Abstract: Inflammatory lesions were the most frequent non-neoplastic cervical lesions. These lesions therefore account for significant amount of gynecological problems in our environment. Adequate cervical screening with follow up histological biopsies is a relevant tool in diagnosing them to enhance early detection of premalignant and malignant cervical lesions.

“…In this study, the second predominant cervical disease was non-cancerous lesion; among them 53.6% of them was chronic nonspecific cervicitis. Similar study that is conducted in Nigeria, chronic nonspecific cervicitis was the most commonly encountered lesion constituting 72.2% of cervical inflammatory lesions [ 28 ]. Similarly, result that is observed in Puducherry, India was high which accounts 89.23% of cervicitis [ 29 ].…”

“…Studies have shown that chronic granulomatous cervicitis is mostly caused by tuberculosis [2]. Paavonen J et al [8] has stated that the etiology of chronic non-specific cervicitis is variable and it is of importance because it may lead to endometritis, salphingitis and "pelvic inflammatory disease" through ascending intraluminal spread, chorioamnionitis and it may also play a role, in the initiation or promotion of cervical neoplasia.…”
