Monitoring dust storm using Normalized difference dust index (NDDI) and brightness temperature variation in Simi arid areas over Iraq

Abstract: Dust storms are a natural phenomenon occurring in most areas of Iraq. In recent years, the study of this phenomenon has become important because of the danger caused by increasing desertification at the expense of the green cover as well as its impact on human health. In this study  is important to devote the remote sensing of dust storms and its detection.Through this research, the dust storms can be detected in semi-arid areas, which are difficult to distinguish between these storms and desert areas. For the… Show more

“…TB is applied to distinct between airborne dust, and surface dust (aerosol pixels are cooler compare to surface dust). The threshold of TB of 310.5 K that was set to separate aerosols of surface dust [27,33]. It been confirmed that there is a good proportional connection was discovered between the speed of the wind and the dust storm region, in which any increasing in the speed of the wind lead to growing and increasing in the dust storm region.…”

“…Nawal K. Ghazal shows that to get the diversity among dust storm pixels in the image compare with the one without dust storm may be utilized (NDDI) and Brightness Temperature variation (BTV). The results reveal NDDI index are important equipment to obtain dust and to detach D.S of clouds and shining dusty surface through daytime whereas BTV can be used to detach D.S from other surfaces, this algorithm is depended on the variance of the temperature brightness through the dust up in the atmosphere [33]. In This paper, the objective of the study was to investigate Dust Storms detection and the monitoring of DS by using MODIS data to illustrate the DS occurrence by using NDDI index on MODIS satellite data in 2022 with utilizing the MEDI to examine the validity of NDDI for detection DS over Iraq and compare the results with hourly synoptic data obtained from IMOS to validity of NDDI then investigate the relationships and correlation with AOD Aerosols optical depth for the detection of dust storm over Iraq during 2022.…”
