Molecular Detection and Phylogenetic Analysis of Cucumber Mosaic Virus Infecting Bhut Jolokia (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) of Assam

Abstract: Prevalence of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in Bhut Jolokia (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) in Assam was confirmed by reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The symptomatic expression of CMV infection onto Bhut Jolokia was confirmed as chlorotic yellow mosaic appearance of the leaves, smaller leaves, reduction of plant growth, mosaic and mottling of infected leaves, leaves showing shoestring or filliform symptom and leaf puckering based on RT-PCR. This is the first report on molecular characterizatio… Show more

“…CMV is one of the most harmful viruses causing disease outbreaks in agricultural products all around the world [21]. Studies to be conducted in other countries will be helpful in understanding the epidemiology of CMV and in designing an appropriate management program [41].…”

“…Tospoviruses (CaCV and GBNV) infected chilli plants showed concentric rings on mature leaves and chlorotic spots on younger leaves 12 . Indeed, CMV infected chilli plants showed mosaic mottling, puckering, shoe string or filiformity and stunted growth 26 , 27 . Based on symptomology, symptomatic leaf samples of mosaic mottling along with concentric chlorotic ring spots and mosaic with veinal necrosis were suspected for mixed infection.…”

“…Besides, mixed infections tend to affect virulence, accumulation, symptomology and host range which ultimately results in unpredictable pathological consequences 24 , 25 . Moreover, virus interaction in host plant hews the evolutionary dynamic of viral populations 26 . Unraveling the viruses concerned with mixed infections is vital for better understanding of the ecology and evolution of viral diseases which are essential for viral disease prevention and formulating management strategies 25 .…”
