Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome-b sequence data from 13 of the 15 currently recognized species of New World porcupines were used to test competing taxonomic hypotheses and to explore scenarios of morphological evolution and biogeography. Consistent with previous studies, the monophyly of Erethizontidae (Chaetomys + Erethizon + Coendou) and the monophyly of Erethizontinae (Erethizon + Coendou) were both strongly supported. However, cytochrome-b sequence data provide no support for the reciprocal monophyly of Coendou, "Echinoprocta, " and "Sphiggurus" as those taxa were previously recognized by authors. all of the erethizontid species recognized in recent revisionary work and represented by multiple sequences in this study were recovered as monophyletic groups. Maximum-likelihood (Ml) analyses of these data recovered the following phylogeny for 11 species of Coendou: ((melanurus (ichillus (pruinosus + vestitus))) ((spinosus (bicolor + nycthemera)) (prehensilis (mexicanus (quichua + rufescens))))). ancestral-state reconstructions based on the Ml topology suggest that several morphological characters emphasized in past erethizontid classifications (size, nasofrontal sinus inflation, and long fur) have evolved homoplasiously. Maximum-likelihood inference of geographic range evolution suggests that the last common ancestor of living erethizontids was a cis-andean species, and that most subsequent cladogenesis was also cis-andean; however, at least two trans-andean dispersal events are plausibly indicated, as well as two separate invasions of andean landscapes. among the most remarkable results of this study are almost-

Abstract:Land use changes by human activities have been the main causes of habitats and wildlife population degradation. In the Tehuantepec Isthmus in Oaxaca, the tropical habitat of the porcupine Sphiggurus mexicanus has been subject to vegetation and land use changes, causing its reduction and fragmentation. In this study, we estimated vegetation cover and land use (d n ) change rates and assessed habitat availability and potential corridors for possible porcupine movements to avoid its isolation. In the study area, the type of vegetation with the most change rate value was the savanna (d n =-2.9), transformed into induced grasslands. Additionally, we have observed the porcupine (since 2011) in semi-deciduous (d n =-0.87) and tropical dry (d n =-0.89) forests that have been transformed in temporal agriculture and mesquite and induced grasslands. The vegetation inhabited by the porcupine resulted in recording a total of 64 plant species (44 trees, nine vines, seven herbs, four shrubs), of which the vine Bunchosia lanceolata showed the highest importance value (41.85) followed by the trees Guazuma ulmifolia (22.71), Dalbergia glabra (18.05), and Enterolobium cyclocarpum (17.02). The habitat evaluation and potential corridor analysis showed that only 1 501.93ha could be considered as suitable habitats with optimum structural conditions (coverage, surface, and distances to transformed areas) to maintain viable populations of S. mexicanus, and 293.6ha as corridors. An increasing destruction of the porcupines' habitat has been observed in the study area due to excessive logging, and actions for this species and its habitat conservation and management have to be taken urgently. Extensive field work conducted in Paraguay since 1995 allowed us to present the first records for this country of the family Sciuridae (Sciurus urucumus), the genus Bibimys (B. chacoensis), and the species Akodon paranaensis, in addition to the first formal mention of Oxymycterus misionalis, and noteworthy records of Cerradomys maracajuensis, Pseudoryzomys simplex, and Sphiggurus spinosus. These records demonstrate that the mammal fauna of the Paraguayan Oriental Region is more similar in species richness and composition to that of adjacent regions of Argentina and Brazil than previously realized. ResumenUn extenso trabajo de campo realizado en Paraguay desde 1995 nos permitió brindar los primeros registros para el país de la familia Sciuridae (Sciurus urucumus), el género Bibimys (B. chacoensis) y la especie Akodon paranaensis, además de la primera mención formal de Oxymycterus misionalis y registros novedosos de Cerradomys maracajuensis, Pseudoryzomys simplex y Sphiggurus spinosus. Estos registros indican que la mastofauna de la Región Oriental de Paraguay es en términos de riqueza específica y composición, más similar a las zonas adyacentes de Argentina y Brasil de lo considerado previamente.
