New and noteworthy records of Rodentia (Erethizontidae, Sciuridae, and Cricetidae) from Paraguay

Abstract: Extensive field work conducted in Paraguay since 1995 allowed us to present the first records for this country of the family Sciuridae (Sciurus urucumus), the genus Bibimys (B. chacoensis), and the species Akodon paranaensis, in addition to the first formal mention of Oxymycterus misionalis, and noteworthy records of Cerradomys maracajuensis, Pseudoryzomys simplex, and Sphiggurus spinosus. These records demonstrate that the mammal fauna of the Paraguayan Oriental Region is more similar in species richness and … Show more

“…Paraguayan haplotypes are well nested in the paraguayana clade rendering the mostly coastal Brazilian sample paraphyletic to Paraguayan variants. A similar pattern was found in the analysis of a small sample of Akodon paranaensis (D'Elía et al, 2008). In light of this result we suggest that M. (M.) paraguayana would have colonized eastern Paraguay from a source in the Atlantic coastal region.…”

“…This is important given that the mammalian fauna of Paraguay is one of the least known in South America (Pine 1982;Myers et al 2002) even the long history of reports about these vertebrates (de Azara 1801(de Azara , 1802Rengger 1830;Bertoni 1914). This scenario is reflected in several recent additions to the known mammal fauna of Paraguay, which include a marsupial (de la Sancha et al 2007), a bat (Stevens et al 2010), several rodents including a new family (D'Elía et al 2008;Percequillo et al 2008;de la Sancha et al 2009ade la Sancha et al , 2011, an armadillo (Smith et al, in press), and even an exotic lagomorph (de la Sancha et al 2009b). Additional field work will aid in improving sample sizes as well as providing much needed taxonomic, ecological, and distributional data about these groups.…”

“…(D'Elía et al, 2008). Hoffman et al (2002) considered O. quaestor, O. misionalis and O. judex as valid species; however, no substantial differences were found between these taxa in the morphological and molecular analyses.…”

“…Eastern PY forests are unique because their assemblages are composed of species that are more closely related to some of those in the southern coastal AF, some of the northern coastal AF species, as well as Cerrado and Chaco species. For example, species like Juliomys pictipes, Marmosa paraguayana (Tate, 1931), Akodon paranaensis, and Akodon montensis (D'Elía et al 2008, de la Sancha et al 2009a, Valdez and D'Elía 2013 show clear phylogenetic relationships to neighboring Misiones, Argentina, Uruguay, and southeastern coastal Brazil (south of the north-south coastal AF break). northern portion of the coastal AF break.…”
