Modulation bandwidth of a spin laser

Abstract: We have studied small signal frequency response of a spin laser. We have shown that the response is characterized by two distinct resonant peaks corresponding to the two polarization modes of the spin laser. It is observed that the modulation bandwidth of a spin laser can be smaller or larger than that of a conventional laser depending upon the current bias and spin relaxation time constant. A small value for spin relaxation constant may not be detrimental for modulation bandwidth. This anomalous observation i… Show more

“…The progress in fast magnetization reversal could stimulate implementing all-electrical schemes for spin modulation in lasers that were shown to yield an enhanced bandwidth in lasers. 12,16,25,26,29,85,86 |CB ⇑ (⇓) = |1/2, 1/2 (−1/2) |HH ⇑ (⇓) = |3/2, 3/2 (−3/2) |LH ⇑ (⇓) = |3/2, 1/2 (−1/2) |SO ⇑ (⇓) = |1/2, 1/2 (−1/2) .…”

“…Through the angular momentum transfer, the injection of spin-polarized carriers leads to a stimulated emission of circularly polarized light [28][29][30][31]. Spin lasers offer an improved performance, such as a threshold reduction for lasing, an enhanced bandwidth, and reduced parasitic frequency modulation, as compared to their conventional (spin-unpolarized) counterparts [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40].…”

“…Such a device with controllable output circular polarization is useful for the study of fibrous proteins, collagens and asymmetric photochemical reactions which are sensitive to circularly polarized light. Information can be encoded onto both the intensity as well as the polarization of light in an optical communication system, thus effectively doubling the bandwidth of communication channels [27,30]. There have been several reports of excitonpolariton spintronic switches [31,32] and circularly polarized polariton lasers [5,[12][13][14]33].…”
