Human activities have a considerable impact on hydrographic systems and fish fauna. The present review on conservation genetics of neotropical freshwater fish reveals that DNA analyses have been promoting increased knowledge on the genetic structure of fish species and their response to environmental changes. This knowledge is fundamental to the management of wild fish populations and the establishment of Evolutionary Significant Units capable of conserving genetic integrity. While population structuring can occur even in long-distance migratory fish, isolated populations can show reduced genetic variation and be at greater risk of extinction. Phylogeography and phylogeny have been powerful tools in understanding the evolution of fish populations, species and communities in distinct neotropic environments. Captive fish can be used to introduce new individuals and genes into the wild and their benefits and disadvantages can be monitored through genetic analysis. Understanding how fish biodiversity in neotropical freshwaters is generated and maintained is highly important, as these habitats are transformed by human development and fish communities are increasingly exploited as food sources to sustain a growing human population.Keywords: molecular genetics, fish population, biology conservation. Contribuição da Genética da Conservação para o conhecimento da biodiversidade dos peixes de água doce neotropicais ResumoAtividades humanas têm um grande impacto sobre os sistemas hidrográficos e a fauna de peixes. A presente revisão em genética da conservação dos peixes de água doce neotropicais revela que as análises de DNA têm promovido um crescimento no conhecimento da estrutura genética das espécies e suas respostas às alterações ambientais. Este conhecimento é fundamental para o manejo das populações de peixes nativos e para o estabelecimento de Unidades Evolutivas Significantes capazes de conservar a integridade genética dessas populações. Enquanto o fenômeno de estruturação de populações pode ocorrer mesmo em peixes migradores de longas distâncias, populações isoladas podem mostrar reduzida variação genética e apresentar grande risco de extinção. Em adição, a filogeografia e a filogenia têm dado importantes contribuições para o entendimento da evolução das populações, espécies e comunidades de peixes em distintos ambientes neotropicais. Populações de cativeiro podem ser utilizadas como fonte de introdução de novos indivíduos e genes no ambiente natural e seus benefícios e desvantagens podem ser monitorados por meio de análises genéticas. É altamente importante, portanto, entender como é gerada e mantida a biodiversidade de peixes de água doce neotropicais, uma vez que os habitats são transformados pelo desenvolvimento humano e as comunidades de peixes têm sido intensamente exploradas como alimento de sustentação desse crescimento das populações humanas.Palavras-chave: genética molecular, populações de peixes, conservação biológica.

A new miniature species of banjo catfish of the genus Hoplomyzon is described from the Lake Maracaibo Basin in Venezuela. The new species is distinguished from all its congeners by the straight anterior margin of the mesethmoid (vs. a medial notch); a smooth and straight ventral surface of the premaxilla (vs. presence of bony knobs on the ventral surface of premaxilla); absence of teeth on dentary (vs. teeth present on dentary); configuration of ventral vertebral processes anterior to anal fin, which are composed of single processes anterior to anal-fin pterygiophore (vs. paired process); presence of several filamentous barbel-like structures on the ventral surface of head of adults (vs. small papillous structures in the ventral surface of head of adults); and 8 anal-fin rays (vs. 6 or 7). The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochoeris) is the largest rodent on the world and it is strongly linked to the river systems of a large fraction of South America and part of Central America (Panama). Thus, it is an interesting species to test hypotheses about the origin of the high biodiversity within the Amazon Basin and in a sizeable fraction of the Neotropics. To test these hypotheses, we sequenced two mitochondrial genes (control region and Cytochrome b) of 78 wild capybaras sampled in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. At least, five different "populations" or ESUs were detected in well delimited geographical areas. However, our results do not support the more recent view that two different species of capybara are present (H. hydrochoeris and H. isthmus), unless chromosomal speciation (stasipatric or parapatric) can be demonstrated between these two groups. A Bayesian tree with the aforementioned two mitochondrial genes, and another Bayesian tree with a subset of 25 capybaras for 10 mitochondrial genes, showed that the initial diversification of the mitochondrial haplotype in capybaras was initiated in the Late Miocene. The trees also showed that the other haplotype diversification processes extended into the Pliocene and Pleistocene. We also detected population expansion events during different moments of the Pleistocene. Although some authors strongly suggest that the Miocene diversification explains the extreme biodiversity in the Amazon Basin and in surroundings areas (for instance, the Paleogeography hypothesis), others consider it the result of available forest refugia (Refuge hypothesis) during the Pleistocene. However, our results suggest that both hypotheses (and others, such as the Riverrefuge, the Recent Lagoon and the Hydrogeological Recent Change hypotheses) could have affected the evolution of the capybara to generate the current mitochondrial diversity. Thus, it is difficult to generalize a unique Amazon biota diversification hypothesis because each species or taxon could be affected by different processes and because the temporal antiquity of each taxon in South America is also different. Many mammalian taxa, and others, migrated into South America during the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI) and their diversification processes in South America were mainly driven by Pleistocene events as those proposed by the Refuge hypothesis. Older taxa within this continent could have begun their current genetics diversification processes earlier, such as in the case of the capybara.
