Milk production characteristics in Southern Brazil

Abstract: This paper aimed to describe milk production in Southern Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, and to identify factors that affect milk quality at this region. The average age of regional dairy farmers is 49, and 67.9% has not concluded elementary school. Dairy farming is carried out on properties with an average of 26.06 hectares and 8.4 lactating cows. Most of them (32.83%) yield 50 to 100 L/day. Among the properties, 13.21% yield up to 30 L/day, and only 1.89% produces over 500 milk liters a day. Average yield w… Show more

“…In the last 20 years, grasses of the Bermuda group have become the most important pasture for milk production in the south of Brazil region (Fernandes, 2012;Picoli et al, 2015). However, conditions afforded by the subtropical climate found in southern Brazil make it difficult to increase dry matter production, as well as grazing time and the production of hay from this grass; this is mainly due to low water availability during dry periods in the spring/summer, and low temperatures in the autumn/winter (Vendramini et al, 2016).…”

“…The region formed by the west of Santa Catarina, northwest of Rio Grande do Sul and southwest of Paraná is where the productivity of milk currently grows most in Brazil, due to the favorable climate, qualified labor and the presence of pasture all year round (SEAB, 2019). Milk production in southern Brazil is primarily focused on family farms (PICOLI et al, 2015). Pasture is an important component in the milk production systems of this region, enabling farmers to have a satisfactory agricultural income (BREITENBACH, 2018).…”
