Microbial activity of some heterocyclic Schiff bases and metal complexes: A review

Abstract: Microbial resistance to current drugs associated with food spoilage and complications in diseases' treatment have resulted in increased mortality rate globally. Schiff bases are an important versatile class of organic compounds with notable pharmacological properties for various industrial applications. They are usually synthesized from a condensation reaction between a primary amine and a carbonyl. They have a wide range of activities against microbes and demonstrate good antimicrobial activity against fungi,… Show more

“…So, chemists focus on the generation of new chemotherapeutic drugs. Schiff base derived from a heterocyclic ring with carbonyl compounds is one of the important special center of attraction in many biological, clinical, medicinal and pharmacological field . 4‐Aminoantipyrine based heterocyclic had a great importance as it is abundant in nature and several derivatives of antipyrine have a wide activity as analgesic, anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer activity .…”

“…Schiff base derived from a heterocyclic ring with carbonyl compounds is one of the important special center of attraction in many biological, clinical, medicinal and pharmacological field. [1][2][3] 4-Aminoantipyrine based heterocyclic had a great importance as it is abundant in nature and several derivatives of antipyrine have a wide activity as analgesic, [4] antiinflammatory, [5] antimicrobial, [6] and anticancer activity. [7][8][9] It also has been used for the protection against oxidative stress as well as prophylactic of some diseases including cancer and these are important directions in medical applications.. [10] Also, it is well documented that oxime compounds and their complexes with transition metals have many applications in medicine and biology.…”

“…The antiparasitic activities observed could be related to the abilities of these compounds to form hydrophobic interactions through the benzene rings, as demonstrated in the molecular docking studies for cruzain and alpha-tubulin. The high hydrophobic nature of Schiff bases, containing various benzene rings, has been shown to increase their lipophilic properties and facilitate their movements across the membrane bilayer [ 43 ]. Other possible routes of action for the biological activities observed for Schiff bases containing benzimidazole include interactions with DNA [ 15 ].…”

“…Tetrazolium based on MTT assay (Tetrazolium dye 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) is a colorimetric ocean used to measure the activity of enzymes and to determine the cytotoxicity of the medical component or toxic substances [19], the assay was used the mammalian cell lines MT-4 cells for the detection of anti-HIV. Largest activity observed in complexes comparing with Schiff base ligand and especially with gold complex due to its highly antiviral property, the coordination occur through the sulfur atom and nitrogen of triazole ring with gold ion, Figure 2 [20][21]. In 2013, Laila H. and co-workers investigated the ion of Fe (II) with Schiff base amino acid chelates derived from the ortho-hydroxynaphth aldehyde with different amino acid (L-alanine, L-phenylalanine, L-aspartic acid, L-histidine and L-arginine).The Fe (II) complexes were synthesized and characterized via chemical and physical measurements, Figure 3.…”

“…Also, another Schiff bases derivative based on sulphonamide compound as a backbone for these derivatives, and all the derivatives have an antimalarial activity and used as a strong inhibitors for carbonic anhydrase enzyme, which is shown in Figure 5. This activity depends on the substituted groups in the aromatic aldehydes [20]. In 2015, Anjali J. and co-worker prepared different triazole Schiff base ligands and there complexes with Co (II), Ni (II), Ag (I) ions, and characterized using physical and analytical technique, Figure 6.…”
