Microbacterium wangchenii sp. nov., isolated from faeces of Tibetan gazelles (Procapra picticaudata) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract: Two strains of Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria (designated dk512T and dk508) were isolated from the faeces of Tibetan gazelle (Procapra picticaudata) collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, PR China. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the strains showed the highest identity to Microbacterium saccharophilum K-1T (98.0 and 97.9 % similarity, respectively). The phylogenetic analys… Show more

“…Members of the genus are widely distributed in diverse environments such as soil, sediment or activated sludge, clinical specimens, fresh water, and seawater [2]. Some species have been isolated from animal faeces [4, 5] and plants [6, 7]. A few species have been recovered from the insects such as a moss Eacles imperials [8, 9], dead Saperda caracharias [10, 11] and Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis [12].…”

“…While studying the microflora diversity of Tibetan Plateau wildlife (PR China; e.g. wild ass, antelope, gazelle, vultures, plateau pika, marmot and snow finch), quite a few novel species have been uncovered in our laboratory, including Nocardioides yefusunii , Streptococcus pantholopis , Microbacterium wangchenii , Actinomyces liubingyangii , Luteimonas chenhongjianii , Lactobacillus xujianguonis and Vagococcus xieshaowenii [11–17]. The 16S rRNA gene sequences (described below) of these four hitherto unknown micro-organisms (zg-686 T , zg-691, HY186 T and HY189) isolated from marmot ( Marmota himalayana ) and wild ass ( Equus kiang ) have low similarity to those of known species in the GenBank database.…”

“…Culturomics has become an essential strategy for investigating microbial diversity, which has been employed previously by our research group in the isolation and characterization of several novel microbial species, including Cellulomonas shaoxiangyii , Luteimonas chenhongjianii , Microbacterium wangchenii , Nocardioides dongxiaopingii and Vagococcus xieshaowenii [22–26]. During a study exploring the Nocardioides microbial diversity on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau that included wildlife ( Procapra picticaudata , Equus kiang , Pantholops hodgsonii , Ochotona curzoniae , etc.…”
