“…Diagnostic accuracy requires nurses to cluster assessment data through the use of clinical judgment as a basis for determining priority foci of care, setting appropriate outcomes, and selecting evidence-based interventions. Thus, nurses usually identify a set of defining characteristics and verify a plausible relationship between the diagnostic hypotheses of a specific situation and the characteristics presented by the patient (Lopes, Silva, & Araujo, 2012). It is, therefore, critical for nurses to understand the concepts that underlie each nursing diagnosis, and to understand the diagnostic indicators necessary for the accurate diagnosis of their patients.…”

“…Generally, nurses identify a set of defining characteristics and verify the relationship between the most plausible diagnoses of a particular situation with the defining characteristics presented by the patient (Lopes, Silva, & Araujo, 2012). Identification of each new characteristic can confirm a suspected diagnosis, eliminate another, or even redirect the nurse's attention to a human response not yet considered.…”

“…Therefore, the diagnostic labels should be clear, accurate and reliable (Caldeira, Chaves, Carvalho, & Vieira, 2012). Thus, it is necessary to stimulate the development of clinical validation studies to determine the relationship between clinical indicators (defining characteristics) and nursing diagnoses (Lopes, Silva, & Ara ujo, 2012). The precise establishment of nursing diagnoses has contributed to enhancing the effectiveness of care and reducing costs in healthcare institutions (Frazão, Tinôco, Paiva, Lucio, & Lira, 2015;Udina, Samartino, & Calvo, 2012).…”

“…Validating nursing diagnoses requires providing evidence for the existence of a phenomenon in practice. Validation occurs in three stages: a concept analysis, a validation by experts and a study of diagnostic accuracy (Lopes et al, 2012). Many diagnoses have not been subjected to clinical validation procedures to assess the adequacy of their clinical indicators and delimit the competence of the nursing field.…”
