“…However, studies addressing the neonatal population have not been conducted (Andrade, Chaves, Silva, Beltrão, & Lopes, 2012;Beltrão, Silva, Araujo, & Oliveira Lopes, 2011;Pascoal et al, 2012;Pascoal et al, 2014;Silva & Nóbrega 1997;Silva, Araujo, & Lopes, 2006;Silva, Lopes, & Araujo, 2007;Silva, Lopes, Araujo, Beltrão, & Chaves, 2011). These RND have been studied with the intent of refining them within specific populations, such as in children with respiratory and cardiac problems.…”

“…The studies centered on the NANDA-I nursing diagnoses, IBP, IGE, and ineffective spontaneous ventilations (ISV) in children with cardiac and respiratory problems. Of these, seven publications analyzed the defining characteristics that identified the IBP diagnosis in children with asthma, respiratory infection, and cardiopathy (Beltrão, Silva, Araujo, & Oliveira Lopes, 2011;Cavalcante, Mendes, Lopes, & Lima, 2010;Monteiro, Silva, & Lopes, 2006;Pascoal et al, 2014;Silva & Nóbrega, 1997;Silva, Beltrão, & Guedes, 2010;Silveira, Lima, & Lopes, 2008), one study was on the diagnosis of IGE (Silva, Lopes, & Araujo, 2007a) in children with cardiopathologies, four explored the prevalence and association of the two diagnoses, IBP and IGE (Pascoal et al, 2012;Silva, Araujo, & Lopes, 2006;Silva, Lopes, & Araujo, 2007b;Silva, Lopes, Araujo, Beltrão, & Resendes-Chaves, 2011), and one study referred to the prevalence of the nursing diagnoses of IBP, IGE, and ISV (Andrade, Chaves, Silva, Beltrão, & Lopes, 2012). The synthesis of these studies is presented in Table 2.…”

“…This is a frequent diagnosis in situations in which there is a low oxygen concentration, increased work of breathing, and reduced pulmonary compliance (Silva et al., , , , ). The most common characteristics are those associated with increased respiratory effort, such as dyspnea, shortness of breath , change in respiratory frequency and rhythm , accessory muscle use , and increased anteroposterior diameter (Andrade et al., ; Cavalcante et al., ; Pascoal et al., ; Silva & Nóbrega, ; Silveira et al., ). Other studies that analyzed these indicators showed dyspnea and alterations in depth of breathing as the most sensitive characteristics, and nasal flaring , altered chest excursion , and orthopnea as the most specific (Andrade et al., ; Cavalcante et al., ; Silva & Nóbrega, ; Silveira et al., ), whereas use of accessory muscles was considered to be the better measurement of accuracy for this diagnosis (Pascoal et al., ).…”
