Metabolism and health effects of phyto-estrogens

Abstract: Phyto-estrogens are plant-derived compounds that can exert various estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects, and are usually used as a natural alternative to estrogen replacement due to their health benefits, including a lowered risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms. Phyto-estrogens are also considered as endocrine disruptors due to their structure similar to human female hormone 17-β oestradiol. However, the issue of whether phyto-estrogens are beneficial or harmful to huma… Show more

“…Phytoestrogens are a group of plant-derived bioactive compounds that have estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects due to their structures resembling estradiol [ 18 , 19 ] and they are also considered to be endocrine disruptors [ 20 ]. The two principal groups of phytoestrogens comprise lignans and isoflavones.…”

“…Dietary and herbal approaches can be used as alternative medicines to slow the rate of bone loss. Many common foods contain naturally occurring bioactive molecules called phyto‐estrogens, which have potential roles in preventing bone resorption and enhancing bone formation . Various fruits, such as tomatoes (lycopene), dried plums, citrus fruits (flavonoids), berry fruits (phenolic acid and flavonoids), grapes (resveratrol), and apples (phloridzin), are rich in potent antioxidants, and these may have beneficial effects on bone health .…”

“…Identification of novel phytoestrogens and characterization of their biological activities continues to be an area of active research (Nie et al, 2015). A thorough literature search reveals that many other phytosteroids exist and bind the progesterone, androgen, and corticoid receptors.…”
