Metabolic Syndrome: Criteria for Diagnosing in Children and Adolescents

Abstract: Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is defined as a group of risk factors related to insulin resistance and its highest prevalence is found in obese individuals. The first observations concerning MS occurred in the 1920s, contributing to a surge of new associations between hyperglycemia and obesity. As of 1979, there was a greater understanding of one of its components: insulin resistance. The prevalence of MS varies according to the diagnostic criterion used, mainly for children and adolescents among which its prevalence… Show more

“…Close to 90% of obese children and adolescents have at least one feature of the metabolic syndrome (18). The prevalence is also higher in Hispanics compared to Caucasian, or African American population (14,24). A clustering of risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome has been demonstrated in certain adult populations, including East Asians, Asian Indians, Native Americans, Japanese Americans and Hispanics (25,26).…”

“…Sindrom metabolik terjadi apabila terdapat minimal tiga dari lima faktor risiko yaitu obesitas abdominal (lingkar pinggang ≥ persentil 90, untuk laki-laki maupun perempuan); tekanan darah ≥ persentil 90, untuk laki-laki maupun perempuan; kadar kolesterol HDL ≤ 40 mg/dl; kadar trigliserida darah ≥ 110 mg/dl; dan kadar GDP ≥ 110 mg/dl (19). Jika subjek memiliki 1 sampai 2 faktor risiko, maka subjek diklasifi kasikan kelompok pra-sindrom metabolik.…”

Namun, nilai maksimum asupan natrium menunjukkan bahwa terdapat subjek yang memiliki jumlah asupan natrium melebihi rekomendasi (asupan rekomendasi 1500 mg/hari).…”
