Mechanically robust, chemically inert superhydrophobic charcoal surfaces

Abstract: We report a fast and cost-effective strategy towards the preparation of superhydrophobic composites where a double-sided adhesive tape is paved with charcoal particles. The composites are mechanically robust, and resistant to strong chemical agents.

“…To better observe the status of water droplets, a piece of red paper was placed under the tested stainless steel meshes. It is well-known that the surface of the untreated mesh is intrinsically hydrophobic 33 and its WCA is 115.6 (as shown in Fig. 3a).…”

“…26 Also, hydroxyl acrylic resin could play a stabilizing role between hydrophobic modied SiO 2 and substrates. 27 Besides, PVA, 28,29 PDMS, 30,31 double-sided tape, 32 and PVDF 33 were involved in the enhancements of superhydrophobic surfaces.…”

“…In principle, the ideal candidates for oil/water separation should be both hydrophobic and oleophilic, which can be achieved by a certain roughness (classical micro-nano hierarchical structure) with low surface energy materials [5,34]. But, it is not easy to achieve surface modification on SCFs because of the chemical inert of ceramic foams.…”

“…Xie et al prepared the fluorine-free and mechanically robust superhydrophobic coating on glass by using charcoal particles. [26] Metal-organic frameworks( MOFs), a class of coordination compounds assembled by inorganic metal-containing nodes and organic linkers, [27] are another ideal alternative for fluorine-free superhydrophobic coatings. [28,29] Recently,s ilane and polymers were used to achieve high hydrophobicity.F or instance, Vüllers et al constructed nanohairs on polycarbonatef ilm by hot pulling.…”
