Measures of Industry Agglomeration in Brazil: A Study Addressing Neighboring Effects

Abstract: This paper addresses the impact of including neighboring effects to analyze the concentration status of some manufacturing sectors across the Brazilian meso-regions from 1995 through 2010. The analysis of spatially weighted indices – namely – points to a likely deconcentration process in most sectors of the Brazilian manufacturing industry in the period under study. In contrast to spatially unweighted indices, spatially weighted concentration indices proved to be more robust for addressing neighboring effects … Show more

“…However, unlike most previous studies of the Brazilian regional context, we did find that differences in regional occupational structures are almost as important as schooling to understand regional wage gaps between the SPMR and the northeastern regions. This last evidence highlights the fact that the spatial distributions of occupations do not immediately follow the spatial distribution of industries (Vignandi et al 2016). It also appears to be consistent with greater agglomeration gains arising from the SPMR's much bigger labour market, which allows greater specialization of occupations.…”

“…The inter regional partnerships also embrace universities and research institutions from other countries. We can then note that, research groups from the Southeast region collaborate more with partners from the same region, as this region concentrates the major Brazilian industrial park (Vignandi, Parré, and Guimarães 2016) and has also a higher density of institutions. Collaborations in Northeast, North and Central-West regions are less located within the region.…”
