Urban and rural population growth in a spatial panel of municipalities. Regional Studies. Using Bayesian posterior model probabilities and data pertaining to 3659 Brazilian minimum comparable areas (MCAs) over the period 1970-2010, two theoretical settings of population growth dynamics resulting in two spatial econometric specifications in combination with a wide range of potential neighbourhood matrices are tested against each other. The best performing combination counts five determinants producing significant long-term spatial spillover effects. Ignoring these spillovers, as many previous population growth studies have done, is shown to underestimate their impact and thus the effectiveness of policy measures acting on these determinants.

This paper uses both macro- and micro-data to analyse the role of social programmes in the recent reduction in Brazilian regional income inequality. Convergence indicators are presented for different sources of regional income in the period 1995-2006. A decomposition of the Gini indicator allows the identification of the role of each of these income sources with respect to the reduction of regional inequality during the period. The results point out that both labour productivity and government non-spatial policies - mainly minimum wage changes and income transference programmes - do have a role in explaining regional inequality reduction during the period. This paper identifies the determinants of economic growth and analyses the dynamics of income using a panel of 522 Brazilian micro-regions for period . Based on the spatial extension of the Mankiw-Romer-Weil (MRW) model and explicitly considering both physical and human capital, the parameters of a Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) with fixed-effects are estimated. The direct and indirect impacts of the determinants of regional growth are then calculated. The results indicate strong spatial dependence among Brazilian micro-regions and that investments in both physical and human capital are important for the growth of the Brazilian regional economies. O objetivo do trabalho é avaliar o impacto do programa estadual Pacto pela Vida sobre as taxas de homicídio do Estado de Pernambuco. Implementado pelo governo do estado em 2007, o referido programa visa a redução dos níveis de violência no estado e tem foco específico as taxas de homicídio. A pesquisa utiliza Controles Sintéticos para obter contrafactuais para a taxa de homicídio do Estado e seus resultados indicam que o Pacto pela Vida foi bem sucedido em seu objetivo de redução da taxa de homicídio no período 2007-2014, mas deixa de ser eficaz nesta tarefa a partir de então.

O trabalho caracteriza os níveis e padrões da concentração da indústria brasileira entre 1994 e 2004, e identifica os determinantes econômicos do crescimento do emprego industrial estadual brasileiro no período. As evidências mostram que desconcentração industrial é mais forte para o segmento intensivo em recursos naturais e mais fraca no de intensivo capital. Novos polos de crescimento do emprego parecem surgir no Nordeste, especialmente, para o segmento intensivo trabalho. As evidências obtidas apontam para a importância das externalidades dinâmicas - as quais são mensuradas pela variável diversidade industrial - dos linkages de mercados e dos custos de transportes para o crescimento do emprego. Essas evidências são coerentes com os argumentos da Nova Geografia Econômica e de Jacobs.
The work characterizes the concentration levels and patterns of Brazilian transformation Industry, and identifies the economical determinants of the industrial employment growth for the states of Brazil, in 1994 and 2004. The evidences show that industrial desconcentration is stronger for the intensive capital segment and weaker for natural resources segment. New poles of employment growth seem to appear in the Northeast, especially, for the segment intensive labor. The market linkages, or pecuniary externalities, and of the dynamic externalities, measured by the industrial diversity, are important evidence for the employment growth of transformation industry of Brazilian states. ResumoA partir da utilização dos microdados da Pesquisa de Orçamento Familiar (POF) dos biênios 1995-96 e 2002-03, o trabalho fornece evidências a respeito dos níveis e da evolução da desigualdade da distribuição dos gastos familiares per capita e da desigualdade da distribuição do consumo familiar per capita no Brasil metropolitano e a respeito da importância dos diferentes tipos de gastos familiares nas dinâmicas observadas. Os resultados, obtidos a partir de indicadores tradicionais de desigualdade e de análises de Dominância de Lorenz, apontam para importantes movimentos em termos de diminuição da desigualdade em ambos os tipos de gastos. Medida a desigualdade pelo índice de Gini, observa-se que a redução deste índice é afetada de forma significativa pelas dinâmicas dos gastos com Habitação, Higiene e Cuidados Pessoais e Vestuário, favoráveis à diminuição da desigualdade, e pelas as dinâmicas dos gastos com Educação, Saúde e Alimentação, favoráveis à desigualdade. Diferenças regionais são apontadas a partir das regiões metropolitanas de Recife e São Paulo. The results, obtained by using traditional inequality indicators and Lorenz Dominance, show that the dynamics of inequality for these distributions present important movements favoring inequality reduction. Spending dynamic of Habitation, Hygiene and Personal Care and of Wearing favored total consumption inequality and the dynamic spending of Education, Health and Food favored total consumption inequality increasing. Regional differences are highlighted by considering the cases of Recife and São Paulo metropolitan regions.

A partir de uma base em dados primária derivada de pesquisa de campo da Fundação Joaquim Nabuco, este trabalho preenche parte da lacuna na literatura brasileira ao apresentar evidências recentes e inéditas a respeito da mobilidade intergeracional de educação na Região Metropolitana do Recife em 2010, evidências estas que são cotejadas com aquelas para demais Regiões Metropolitanas obtidas para o ano de 1996. Os principais resultados obtidos, que refletem um período de significativas transformações sociais, confirmam o que a literatura que trata da mobilidade intergeracional de educação destaca como importante: a persistência de educação entre pais e filhos no Brasil ainda é muito alta e heterogênea, mesmo em 2010 no caso do Recife, embora apresente redução em relação ao ano de 1996. A probabilidade de um filho cujo pai não tem escolaridade replicar o status educacional do seu pai é de 30%, valor considerado elevado quando tantas oportunidades educacionais estão disponíveis. Palavras-Chave educação, persistência intergeracional, armadilha de pobreza AbstractThe main objective of this work is to verify if the social changes in Brazil in recent decades impacted positively in increased rates of intergenerational mobility of education. Since based on the PNAD data of 1996's, Brazil is cited as one of the countries with the lowest intergenerational mobility in income and education in the world. Thus, this study provides results on intergenerational mobility of education in the metropolitan areas of Brazil in 1996, with results to a more recent period for the Metropolitan Region of Recife in 2010, based on data from Fundaj. The main results presented here confirm what the persistence of education among parents and children in Brazil is very high and heterogeneous. The probability of a child whose father has no education to replicate the educational status of his father is 30%, very high value for the year when so many educational opportunities are available.
