Measurement in business processes: a systematic review

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current state of the art and trends with regard to business process measurement by means of a systematic review of literature. Design/methodology/approach -The results are obtained through a systematic review carried out according to existing relevant guidelines. Additionally, a specific methodology through which to systematically obtain all the most important journals is followed. In total, 19 relevant articles are selected and later analyzed. A subsequent … Show more

“…de Oca et al [18] present an SLR conducted with the aim to determine the aspects of process modeling quality that had been addressed in the literature and gaps remained to be covered. Similarly, Gonzalez et al [19] performed an SLR on business process measurement. The results of both studies indicate that most research in business process modeling focuses on model's pragmatic quality aspects, in particular on the understandability of process models.…”

“…This assumption was verified by looking at the data collection from the literature review on the quality of UML models [22]: although the Lindland, Sindre and Sølvberg framework on conceptual modeling quality was published in 1994 [7], only 5 out of the 266 papers date from before 2000. Similarly, in [24] an SLR is performed on business process metrics, covering the period from 1998 until 2008. The oldest paper reported on is from 2001.…”

“…A reason for this could be that metrics are suggested to quantify quality characteristics of the process models (i.e., the product) such as complexity, size, coupling, cohesion, among others. Since most of the authors do not follow any standard for their quality concepts and describe measures according to their own insight, in [24] authors proposed the use of the ISO 9126 standard [49] as a reference for quality. This standard proposes characteristics and sub-characteristics very close to those described by many authors as measurable concepts in their metrics works.…”
