Non-verbal behaviour is often incorporated in literary fiction to complement or replace the verbal behaviour of characters. Because of its ability to convey messages, it is considered as equally important as verbal behaviour in a literary text. Taking this as a starting point, this study aims to explore the issue of non-verbal behaviour in translation. More specifically, the study aims to determine how the translation of non-verbal behaviour is dealt with in literary fiction, to discuss the implications of the use of different techniques in translating non-verbal behaviour, and finally to suggest techniques that can successfully convey the meaning of nonverbal behaviour in translation. The study uses as its source of data an English novel entitled A Thousand Splendid Suns, and its Malay translation, Seribu Matahari Syurga, and is guided by Poyatos' (2002b) framework on how non-verbal behaviour can be communicated in fiction. The analysis shows that non-verbal behaviour is either described or omitted in translation. The description of non-verbal behaviour, however, does not guarantee that meaning is successfully conveyed to the target readers. Likewise, the omission of non-verbal behaviour in the translation does not automatically imply loss of meaning. What is important is the reproduction of the same function or meaning in the translated text. The findings of this study underline the importance of properly addressing non-verbal behaviour in translation and demonstrate how the functional approach in translation can be employed to find not only suitable solutions to translations problems but also those which are meaningful to the target readers.

This study investigates the meanings of the near-synonyms al-asfār and alkutub (the books) and their English translations. It aims at identifying the contextual meanings of the Qur'ānic near-synonyms based on different exegeses of the Holy Qur'ān. Then, it explains the semantic differences that exist between the Qur'ānic pair and how such semantic differences are reflected in two English translations of the Holy Qur'ān. Besides, it highlights the meanings of the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books) in different Qur'ānic contexts and how the various senses of this lexical item are transferred to English. The study adopts the RC-S approach as a theoretical framework for data analysis. It also employs the qualitative approach for collecting and analyzing the data of the study. The exegeses of the Holy Qur'ān are consulted to identify the semantic differences between the Qur'ānic near-synonyms as well as the meanings of the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books). The findings reveal that there are some semantic differences between the selected Qur'ānic near-synonyms and that such semantic differences are not reflected in the English translations. The findings also show that the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books) and its singular formal-kitāb (the book) are literally translated in some Qur'ānic contexts. The study provides recommendations for readers as well as translators especially the translators of the Holy Qur'ān.

This study examines the nuances among the chosen near-synonyms and the extent to which the translators considered such nuances in the selected translations of the Qur’an. It seeks to identify the meanings of two sets of near-synonyms in their Qur’anic contexts based on the Qur’ānic exegeses. It also highlights the differences in meaning that exist among these near-synonyms and the extent to which the semantic differences among those near-synonyms are preserved in translation. This study is grounded on the RC-S approach by Murphy as a theoretical framework for data analysis. The obtained results show that there are some differences in meaning among the chosen near-synonyms and that some of such nuances are not preserved in the English and French translations. Thus, the study recommends that the differences in meaning among the near-synonyms should be identified before translating the Qur’ānic texts, and subsequently, the identified differences should be reflected in the translation.
