a b s t r a c tThis study evaluated the effect of colostrum from Azawak cows on plasma protein profile, growth, and survival in Red kids from Niger. Forty (40) newborn kids were allocated to one of two treatment-groups: control (free access to water and the mother) and colostrum (free access to water and the mother, but with additional 50 mL of colostrum/animal/day of birth and 25 mL/animal/day from the 2nd to 15th day of age). Blood samples were collected into EDTA vacutainer tubes by jugular puncture at 10 and 30 days of age. Total protein was quantified by the Biuret method. The agarose gel electrophoresis was used to determine the serum levels of albumin, ␣-globulin, ␤ 1 -globulin, ␤ 2 -globulin, ␥-globulin and the albumin/globulin ratio. The animals from the colostrum group showed higher body weight and average daily gain when compared to the control group (P < 0.001). The average concentration in protein at the both sampling times reached higher values in the colostrum than in the control group. At D10, the colostrum group tended (P < 0.07) to show higher levels of ␣-globulin and had higher values (P < 0.05) for ␤ 1 -globulin. At D30, total protein and ␤ 2 -globulins were higher in colostrum group. Colostrum from Azawak cows seems to have positive effects on some plasma proteins levels and on growth rate in Red kids.

Enteric histology of newborn goat kids fed lyophilized bovine colostrum (LBC) was studied. At 0, 7, and 14 h of life 15 male newborns received 5% of body weight of lyophilized bovine colostrum and 14 male newborns goat colostrum (GC), both with 55 mg/ml of IgG. Samples of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were collected at 18, 36, and 96 h of life for analyses of villus height, crypt depth, muscle layer thickness, partial volume of the absorptive mucosa (Vv), density of the absorptive mucosa (Sv), and quantification of goblet cells. Three animals were sampled without colostrum intake (0 h). The histomorphometry was not different between GC and LBC in all segments. In the jejunum, the villus height differed in sampling times (36 h > 0 h and 18 h). The maximum villus height was observed in the jejunum. In the jejunum, crypt depth differed in the sampling times (96 h > 0 and 18 h). Interaction between intestinal segment and sampling times was observed to crypt depth (duodenum 18 h > jejunum 18 h and duodenum 96 h > ileum 96 h). In the ileum, the muscle layer thickness differed in the sampling times (36 h > 0 and 18 h and 96 h > 0 h). The greatest thickness of muscle layer was observed in the duodenum and at 96 h the muscle layer was thicker than at 18 h. The ileum showed the highest Vv at 36 h. The Vv was the highest in the jejunum and higher at 36 h than at 96 h. In the jejunum, an interaction between the treatment and sampling times to goblet cells number (LBC 18 h < GC 18 h and GC 96 h > LBC 96 h) was observed. The ileum showed the greatest number of goblet cells. The ingestion of lyophilized bovine colostrum did not determine any consequences for enteric histology in the first 4 days of goat kids' life.

The limitation in feed availability in the semi-arid region during the lean period can result in a variation of the body condition, body weight of pregnant ewe which in turn may affect the lamb birth weight, colostrum immunoglobulin, growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Therefore, the present study was initiated to assess the interrelationship between late gestational ewe factor and early life lamb factors in the semi-arid tropical region. For this purpose, 83 Malpura and 45 Avikaline pregnant ewes were selected and their body condition score (BCS) at late gestation, body weight at lambing, and birth weight of lambs was recorded. The BCS of ewes in late gestation had significant (P < 0.001) positive correlation (r = 0.465) with the birth weight of lambs. The body weight at lambing was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in single-lamber ewes as compared to twin-bearing ewes. The plasma IGF-1 of lamb increased significantly (P < 0.05) with the increase of BCS of ewe at the late gestation as well as body weight after lambing. The colostrum of twin-lamb producing ewes had higher (P < 0.05) IgG content than single-lamb producing ewes. The concentration of IGF-1 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in single-born lamb as compared to twin-born lamb. Based on the results of the present study, it is to conclude that higher BCS at late gestation and higher body weight of ewes at lambing is desirable for producing lambs with a higher birth weight having higher growth potential as well as chances of survival.
