Lycopene Protects the Diabetic Rat Kidney Against Oxidative Stress-mediated Oxidative Damage Induced by Furan

Abstract: Furan is a food and environmental contaminant and a potent carcinogen in animals. Lycopene is one dietary carotenoid found in fruits such as tomato, watermelon and grapefruit. The present study was designed to explore the protective effect of lycopene against furan-induced oxidative damage in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat kidney. At the end of the experimental period (28 days), we found that lycopene markedly decreased the malondialdehide (MDA) levels in the kidney, urea, uric acid and creatinine l… Show more

“…In the present study, the administration of lycopene for 28 days revealed a reduction of cardiotoxicity in diabetic rats. The protective role of lycopene on cells was seen in previous studies, too Boyacioglu et al, 2016;Lopez-Jornet et al, 2016;Pandir et al, 2016).…”

“…In fact, it is well documented that increasing oxidative stress initiates DM formation (Bas et al, ; Jaganjac, Tirosh, Cohen, Sasson, & Zarkovic, ). Kalender et al, () and Pandır et al, () indicated a relevance between DM and enhanced MDA content. MDA is used at designated levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO).…”
