Wireless network virtualization (WNV) is a promising technique to solve the ossification of current networks. In this paper, a generalized Long Term Evolution (LTE) air interface virtualization framework is proposed where virtual operators (VOs) are enabled to share the physical resources owned by the infrastructure provider (InP). This user-centric feature provides VOs with the flexibility to manage their own virtualized networks according to different user traffic demand. Hence, we introduce the "Gini Coefficient" to quantitatively characterize the user traffic behavior among different VOs. In addition, we consider bandwidth-power allocation to optimize system energy efficiency (EE). The resource allocation problem is formulated as a mixed combinatorial and non-convex optimization problem, which is extremely difficult to solve. To reduce the computational complexity, we decouple the problem into two steps. First, for a given power allocation, we obtain the bandwidth allocation. Adopting bankruptcy game model and the well-known Shapley value, a heuristic bandwidth allocation algorithm is devised. Second, under the assumption of known bandwidth allocation, we transform the original optimization problem into an equivalent convex optimization problem and obtain the optimal solution via fractional programming. Through simulation, the results of user behavior and resource allocation are jointly analyzed. The user behavior is proved to be effective and the proposed resource allocation outperforms conventional schemes.

Markets for spectrum were first proposed by Ronald Coase [1] as a way to efficiently allocate this resource. It took another forty years for primary markets to be developed (in the form of spectrum auctions) as the mechanism for assigning spectrum licenses to users. It is not a secret that secondary markets would be necessary to fully realize the benefits of economic allocation of spectrum. But this is easier said than done, since spectrum is a complex, multi-dimensional product with relatively few buyers and sellers (at least for commercial mobile services), so liquid secondary markets have not emerged, even though spectrum trading through brokers is commonplace.In this paper, we find that liquidity for spectrum markets can be improved over "naked" spectrum markets [2, 3] when a standardized commodity can be traded that uses the principles of spectrum virtualization [4]. We utilize the Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) of LTE-Advanced as the traded commodity and modify the SPEC-TRAD model developed in [5] accordingly. Though much remains to be done, we find that this is a promising approach to finally realizing liquid secondary markets in radio spectrum.

Abstract-The virtualization of wired networks and end computing systems has become one of the leading trends in networked information and communication technology (ICT) systems. In contrast relatively little virtualization has occurred in infrastructure based wireless networks, but the idea of virtualizing wireless access is gaining attention as it has the potential to improve spectrum utilization and perhaps create new services. In this paper we survey the state of the current research in virtualizing wireless networks. We define and describe possible architectures, the issues, hurdles and trends towards implementation of wireless network virtualization.
