Low-cost power systems metrology laboratory based on raspberry Pi

Abstract: In this paper, a low-cost Power Systems Metrology Laboratory, based on the Raspberry Pi board and the ADE7878 energy metering IC is presented. The designed experimental platform is intended for developing skills among the undergraduate students of the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and the Autonomous University of Yucatan, Mexico. A series of exercises have been developed in order to measure different Power quantities and to evaluate different definitions of such quantities to observe how the accuracy of … Show more

“…Low-cost monitoring systems is a relevant topic, especially for academic and research applications where financial budgets are often limited. Therefore, efforts have been made for a cheaper solution to collect and display data from electricity, gas or environmental sensors in experimental microgrids [15, 16, 17, 18], given industrial solutions are often expensive and not suitable for small scale applications.…”

“…This architecture is compared to a commercial PMU showing adequate performance monitoring of the Brazilian grid. An experimental platform developed for educational purposes is presented in [11], including PMU functionalities. Another low-cost PMU prototype proposal was developed in [12], based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) exploring latency requirements of PMU applications with a considerably commercially reduced cost.…”

“…A second class of OS-based PMU solutions relies on the well-known Raspberry Pi board (RPi), a widely adopted multipurpose ARM platform running Raspbian OS, a free Linux distribution optimized for its hardware. Its versatility emerges for instance from its adoption for educational purposes: for example, in conjunction with Matlab Simulink blocks, it is used to propose laboratory exercises on PMU algorithms for undergraduate students in UK and Mexico [14]. A concrete application of a RPi as fully functional PMU was introduced with the LoCo PMU [15], where the authors present a low-cost device that integrates an external DAQ board and a GPS module.…”
