Long-term metabolic effects of different doses of niacin-bound chromium on Sprague-Dawley rats

Abstract: We simultaneously assessed benefits and risks of niacin-bound chromium (NBC) intake at varying doses over a prolonged period of time (>1.2 years) in male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. We performed the study in two phases. First, we followed 60 male and 60 female SD rats, each gender divided into six groups. Through day 150 (phase 1A), all SD rats received a high sucrose diet (30% w/w) with or without different concentrations of NBC. The male/female groups were: 1] control without NBC n = 10, 2] low NBC … Show more

“…Cr has been reported to lessen the activity of the RAAS (Talpur et al, 2003;Perricone, et al, 2008). ACE activity was significantly lower or tended to be lower in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats consuming greater concentrations of niacin-bound Cr, resulting in reduced circulating Ang-II levels (Table-2) (Perricone et al, 2010). Chaudhary et al (2018) reported that Fe overload significantly increased retinal renin expression in mice…”

“…5 We have previously reported alterations in the renal NO system in type 2 diabetic rats. 6 Niacin-bound chromium (NBC), at adequate dosing, increases insulin sensitivity, enhances NO activity, and appears to be non-toxic. 7 Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) results in NO release from the endothelium of blood vessels and causes vasodilation via cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).…”
