Light emitting diode (LED) use in artificial lighting for broiler chicken production

Abstract: Light emitting diode (LED) has been used in commercial poultry industry by presenting superior energy savings and providing feasibility on production process. The objective of this research was to evaluate performance and carcass yield of broiler chickens exposed to different LED colors compared with fluorescent lamps. For that, two experiments (E1 and E2) were performed and 2,646 Cobb® chickens were used. In experiment E1, male birds were exposed to 20 lux artificial lighting with red, yellow, blue, and white… Show more

“…In study of Karakaya et al(2009), only female broilers were used and performance in response to light is expected to be different between males and females, as found in the present study. Santana et al (2014) did not find any broiler performance differences when LED or fluorescent light were used. The main difference in the present study was detected when EEI was evaluated, as it allows comparing overall parameters.…”

“…Furthermore, proper positioning of light sources and their distribution in the shed encourages birds to seek food, water, and heat during the rearing phase. For Santana et al (2014) the use of LEDs has been highlighted in aviculture because it presents energy savings and provides viability of the breeding process.…”

“…Environmental lighting technology has greatly advanced in the recent years, and traditional light bulbs are being gradually replaced by light emitting diode (LEDs) lamps (Gongruttananun and Guntapa, 2012;Santana et al, 2014). The main advantage of the LED is the energy saving (80% less energy waste as compared to incandescent bulbs and 50% compared to fluorescent lamps), longer shelf life and color diversity (Molino et al, 2015).…”
