Objective: To analyze the level of stress and its relationship with health risk behaviors among university students. Method: Cross-sectional analytical study carried out at a higher education institution in Picos-PI. A total of 377 students were evaluated for socio-demographic and academic variables, stress profile, sleep quality, alcohol use, smoking habits and level of physical activity. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20.0 was used for data processing and analysis. Results: Sleep quality was poor for 65.3% of the subjects, and sleep disturbances were found in 17.0%. Stress was observed in 68.7% of the sample. Stress was associated with the following variables: gender, time in the institution, poor sleep quality. Conclusion: Most of the students evaluated present some level of stress associated with poor sleep quality, which is a risk to the quality of life of these individuals.

Resumo Os transtornos psiquiátricos possuem grande morbidade entre estudantes universitários da área da saúde. A depressão e ansiedade são os mais frequentes. O artigo se propõe a analisar os diferentes graus da depressão nos cursos da área de saúde e correlacionar esse transtorno ao gênero e à idade. O trabalho foi qualiquantitativo, desenvolvido com os acadêmicos de medicina, enfermagem e odontologia submetidos ao Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Fizeram parte da amostra 383 acadêmicos; a quantidade de alunos matriculados em medicina foi de 44 (11,62%), odontologia, 94 (24,50%) e enfermagem, 245 (63,87%). Desses, 273 (71,3%) eram mulheres e 110 (28,70%) homens com um intervalo na faixa etária de 26 a 33 anos. Identificou-se que não houve associação entre a variável depressão e gênero; a depressão grave foi constatada em 5,40% dos estudantes de odontologia, 8,60% dos de enfermagem e a depressão moderada a grave em 3,60% dos de medicina. Nota-se pelo BDI que os sintomas depressivos entre estudantes da área da saúde têm-se mostrado superior a outras populações de idade correspondente. A depressão é um fator de risco para a sociedade sendo importante a formulação de políticas de saúde mental, adotando-se medidas de apoio emocional, reestruturação da grade curricular e implementação de atividades psicológicas de autocontrole com criação de grupos de assistência psicológica ao aluno visando a prevenção de transtornos psíquicos nesses futuros profissionais da saúde.

This is a cross‐sectional study whose objective was to identify clustering of lifestyle behaviors among undergraduate nursing students to inform health promotion efforts and improve health outcomes later in life. All 353 undergraduate nursing students from the School of Nursing in a public university, Bahia, Brazil were invited to participate. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were according to the major project. Participants must be enrolled and attending the 1st to 10th semester, with a minimum age of 18 years. Participants were excluded if they had any physical disabilities that limited the collection of anthropometric measures or were completing an internship off‐campus. A total of 286 undergraduate nursing students met the criteria and completed the survey. The questionnaires included standardized measures for demographic, academic, and lifestyle behaviors (e.g., tobacco use, alcohol use, physical activity level, sedentary behavior, and fruits and vegetables consumed). Latent class analysis was performed to identify any clustering of lifestyle behaviors. Descriptive analyses indicated that 3.1% of the students were smokers, 23.1% consumed alcohol, 34.3% were inactive, 85.0% were sedentary, and 80.8% did not consume recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. Latent class analysis produced four distinct subtypes of health risk: (a) low‐health risk (33.57%); (b) moderate‐health risk (27.97%); (c) high‐health risk (19.58%); and (d) very high‐health risk (18.88%). Approximately 38.5% of students were in the very high or high‐risk classes. The proportion of students with very high and high‐health risks emphasizes the importance of health promotion programs for university nursing students.
