Participaram do estudo 865 universitários.
2010 Body image among university students: association with nutritional status and genderAbstract: The present study investigated the body image (BI) of university students and its association with nutritional status and gender. A total of 874 students (504 men), with a mean age of 20.66 (5.48) years, participated in the study. Self-reported body weight and height were used for the calculation of BMI. Body image was evaluated using the body silhouette scale. Associations were analyzed using the chi-square test, with p<0.05. The prevalence of BI dissatisfaction was 77.6%, with men presenting greater dissatisfaction due to leanness, whereas women reported greater dissatisfaction because of excess weight (X 2 =89.68; p<0.001). An association was observed between BI and nutritional status in both men (X 2 =146.20; p<0.001) and women (X 2 =91.88; p<0.001). The prevalence of BI dissatisfaction was high among the university students studied and was associated with gender and nutritional status.
The anthropometric indicators studied had little utility as screening tools for dyslipidemia, especially in children.
Palavras-chave: atividade física, imagem corporal, estado nutricional, jovens universitários ABSTRACTThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of body image dissatisfaction with physical activity level and nutritional status in freshmen from a public Brazilian university. A total of 832 university students (485 men) with a mean age of 20.1 years (standard deviation = 4.6) participated in the study. Self-reported body weight and height were used for the calculation of body mass index. The students responded to the Body Shape Questionnaire and International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Fisher's exact test, considering p < .05. The prevalence of body image dissatisfaction and physical inactivity was 10.1% and 14.5%, respectively. No significant association was observed between body image dissatisfaction and physical activity level. Body image dissatisfaction was associated with nutritional status in both genders (p < .05). University students with excess body weight should be encouraged to pursue a healthier lifestyle in order to promote an adequate nutritional status and also to improve their body image.
