Show more

“…The levels of environmental deterioration have increased during recent decades in response to population growth and local industrial development (PARANAGUÁ et al, 2005), which have compromised the water quality in the estuary. OTTMANN and OTTMANN (1959) presented the very first assessment of the water quality in the estuary, followed many years later by KOENING et al (1995) and, more recently, ANJOS et al (2012) andNORIEGA et al (2013). These authors noted the occurrence, in recent years, of a eutrophic state with high phytoplankton biomass, low transparency and low oxygen concentrations.…”

“…The Capibaribe river estuary ( Fig. 1) is located on the coast of Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil 07 o 54'-8 o 19'S, 34 o 54'-36 o 42'W; hydrographic basin: 7,716 km 2 ; maximum depth 8 m; tidal entry ~15 km from the Atlantic Ocean) (Ottmann & Ottmann, 1960). The climate is warm-humid, pseudo-tropical (Koppen As') with a mean annual temperature of 26 o C and a rainfall of 1500-2000 mm.yr -1 , concentrated from March to August.…”
