Show more

“…Distrust of political and social elites is at the core of the rhetoric of radical or populist parties and part of their attraction for the large segment of the public who is disenchanted with politics and institutions. To gain political power, these parties have often tried to mobilise the abstainers and the disengaged with politics, especially in France 35,36 . But our results suggest that the capacity of these parties to influence their sympathisers is limited.…”

“…Holding vaccine critical positions, as for the defence of conspiracy theories or racist comments, exposes politicians to particularly harsh criticism coming not just from other political actors but from more trusted actors such as scientists and doctors. This topography of debates regarding vaccines in France can be explained by the combination of several complex phenomena including but not limited to: political news agenda-setting trends are still structured around legacy newsmedia which are only weakly partisan and continue to position themselves as gatekeepers against many forms of disinformation especially on science-related issues 48 ; French political parties have only devoted a very marginal interest to health thus contributing to maintaining the idea among journalists that they should be covered in a scientific and depoliticized way; and while the past decade has been marked by the rise of parties to the far left and the far right, France Insoumise and more markedly the Rassemblement National have adopted a strategy of "normalization", trying to avoid being labelled too radical in order to gain votes among the more politically centrist 35,36 . It should be noted that the adoption of a vaccine critical stance was source of tensions within these parties as many of their figureheads felt they risked losing public credibility and their less radical base.…”
