Abstract. Kurnia I, Arief H, Mardiastuti A, Hermawan R. 2021. The potential of bird diversity in the urban landscape for birdwatching in Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 1701-1711. Birdwatching is a recreational activity of observing birds in the wild with the naked eye¸ using tools such as telescopes and binoculars, or listening to bird sounds. The observation locations can be either natural landscape or urban landscapes with bird diversity. However, the dominance of built spaces and man-made vegetation differed from natural landscapes. This difference will affect the composition of birds found in the urban landscape. This paper aimed to analyze bird diversity in urban landscapes and their potential for birdwatching. The research was conducted from February to April 2020 in five cities in Java (Bogor, Sukabumi, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya). Bird data were taken using the IPA method and were carried out in 85 green open spaces. Total bird species found were 75 species, with the largest number found in Bogor (66 species), followed by Surabaya (36 species), Bandung (28 species), Sukabumi (26 species), and Yogyakarta (19 species). The locations with the highest species richness in each city are Bogor Botanical Gardens (53 species), Cikundul Agrotourism Area Sukabumi (18 species), Bandung Zoological Garden (21 species), Gembira Loka Zoo (14 species), and Pakal City Forest Surabaya (20 species). Commonly seen bird species are dominated by generalist species typical of urban landscapes (e.g., Collocalia linchi, Passer montanus, and Pycnonotus aurigaster). Bird species richness has a positive correlation with the local area and habitat diversity. A total of 74 bird species are resident species that can be found throughout the year as birdwatching objects. Only one species are migrant species namely Merops philippinus.

Birds play an essential role in ecosystems, especially in urban landscapes such as the Cibinong Science Center (CSC). As an urban landscape, CSC always experiences land cover changes due to the development of research infrastructure resulting in various human-made land cover types. This study aims to determine the diversity of birds in various types of land cover as a community response to CSC development dynamics. Bird data was collected using the point count method modified with a grid (plot) measuring 200mx200m with a radius of observation as far as 50m at 34 points. Landsat images were analyzed from 2006 to 2018 to see changes in land cover changes. The observations show that there are 35 species of birds. Among those, three birds are protected by Indonesian regulation. There are six type of land cover in CSC paddy fields, buildings, opened area, farm land, plantation, and water. CSC has total diversity S(mean) = 32 covering 65% of all recorded birds. At land cover level, building area show the highest diversity (Shannon=2.03) while paddy fields is the lowest (Shannon=1.45). Based on the Landsat imagery, there are several changes in vegetation and the addition of some buildings.

Vegetation in urban areas can be viewed, as compensation for environmental change due to urbanization of plant diversity affecting the diversity of animals in an ecosystem, the loss of plant species will disrupt the food webs in the ecosystem. Research on the diversity of soil insects found in shade trees species is still not widely done. The purpose of this study were to identify the types of soil insects found in shade trees along Dinoyo and Tlogomas roadside in sub-district of Lowokwaru, Malang and to characterize spatial distribution of soil insect species found in shade trees along Dinoyo and Tlogomas roadside in sub-district of Lowokwaru Malang by using GIS application. Sampling was conducted at two different locations (MT Haryono and Tlogomas Road). Soil insect analysis was calculated using Shannon-Wiener (H') index at different sites. Variables measured were Relative Frequency (FR) and Relative Abundance (KR), while mapping Spatial descriptions. Distribution of soil insects was done by stages in spatial data analysis including digitization, attribute data, map overlay, and map output results. The results of this study obtained the number of species of soil insects as many as 14 species with a total of 287 individuals. Soil insects most commonly found were family Formicidae, the species of Momorium destructor with the number of individuals as much as 87 individuals, and Paratrechina longicornis as many as 86 individuals.
