Depression, one of the most common comorbidities with osteoarthritis (OA), affects patient prognosis and quality of life. It also increases the overall burden of disease. This subgroup of patients has not been effectively managed in clinical settings. The study aimed to direct physicians’ attention to the co-occurrence of depression and OA. Therefore, this review summarizes the relevant literature published over the past 10 years. The focus is on the prevalence of and risk factors for depression in OA, the effects of depression on OA development and treatment response, comorbidity mechanisms, screening, and non-pharmacological treatment. The research on the etiology of depression has been driven largely by epidemiological studies. Recent studies have shown that high levels of pain, poor levels of function, high numbers of OA sites, and slow gait might be associated with depression. However, the pathophysiology of OA and depression comorbidities remains unclear. In addition to immune inflammation and structural changes in the brain, which have been documented in brain imaging studies, psychosocial factors may also play a role. The evidence indicates that depression can be treated with early intervention; however, adjustments may need to be made for individuals with comorbid depression in OA. It is recommended that health care providers pay more attention to depressive symptoms in patients with OA. Clinicians should develop and implement an individualized and comprehensive treatment plan for patients based on a mental health assessment and in teams with other professionals to optimize treatment outcomes.

Association Between Physical Activity and Osteoarthritis of Knee with Quality of Life in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Older adults are relatively physically active compared to other age group. A lack of physical activity (PA) can cause chronic diseases including osteoarthritis of knee (OA knee) and might eventually reduce quality of life (QOL). This present study was aimed to investigate association between levels of PA and OA knee with levels of QOL in community-dwelling older adults. One thousand and sixty-seven community-dwelling older persons were recruited to this descriptive study. PA activity questionnaire was invented. Standardized Oxford knee score and World Health Organization’s Quality of Life scale (WHOQOL-BREF) were used to measure OA knee and QOL levels. Results showed that levels of PA in older adults were significantly associated with levels of OKS (χ2 = 78.565, P-value < .001) and levels of OA knee in older adults were significantly associated with levels of overall QOL (χ2 = 57.738, P-value < .001). Pearson’s correlation also showed interrelation among PA, OA knee, and QOL. In conclusion, PA, OA knee, and QOL are interrelated. Therefore, close monitoring and design of proper PA activity should be implemented in community-dwelling older adults with OA knee.

Öz Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the anxiety-depression and somatization levels of patients scheduled to undergo surgery with the diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA), which is a chronic and painful disease. Materials and Methods: Patients who were scheduled for surgical intervention with the diagnosis of OA were included in the study as the Study Group, and people who could match the patient group in terms of demographic data were included as the Healthy Control Group. Sociodemographic Data Form, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), Penn State Anxiety Scale (PSAS), and Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS) were applied to all participants. Results: A total of 64 people were included in the present study. The mean age of the patients was 64.77±8.14, and the mean age of the healthy control group was 65.22±9.15. OA patients received higher results compared to the control group in anxiety and depression sub-dimension, and in the total score of HADS. The scores of the patient group were much higher than the healthy controls in PSAS and SSAS. Conclusion: According to the results obtained in the present study, it was determined that the preoperative anxiety-depression and somatization scores of patients diagnosed with OA, which is a chronic and painful disease, were high. Based on these results, it is recommended that OA patients are supported well in psychosocial terms during the course of the disease and before surgical intervention to help them more and to facilitate their compliance to surgery.
