Association Between Physical Activity and Osteoarthritis of Knee with Quality of Life in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Abstract: Older adults are relatively physically active compared to other age group. A lack of physical activity (PA) can cause chronic diseases including osteoarthritis of knee (OA knee) and might eventually reduce quality of life (QOL). This present study was aimed to investigate association between levels of PA and OA knee with levels of QOL in community-dwelling older adults. One thousand and sixty-seven community-dwelling older persons were recruited to this descriptive study. PA activity questionnaire was invented… Show more

“…With the aggravation of population aging, the elderly suffering from joint disease has become more and more common [ 1 ]. Osteoarthritis, as a commonly seen chronic disease in the elderly, has an increasing risk with age, which adversely affects the quality of life and retirement life of the elderly [ 2 ]. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure that replaces the knee joint with artificial components and is commonly used to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis [ 3 ].…”

“…According to a recent systematic review [43], two published studies [42,44] have investigated the PA levels with web-based exercise programs; only the study by Bossen et al [44], which actually focused on PA with the patients' preferred activity, has elicited statistically meaningful increases in PA levels. Levels of PA in older adults have been significantly associated with levels of functionality, levels of KOA severity and QoL [45]. Therefore, it is considered essential to encourage specific PA within rehabilitation programs via both exercise and comprehension pathways, as the current study has encapsulated.…”

“…Forced treadmill running offers an interesting intervention to study the effects of genetic factors on OA and IDD, as there is a complex relationship between mechanical use and the development of pain and joint radiographic pathology. This relationship seems to be U‐shaped in nature in humans, as OA is more prevalent in sedentary populations, 33 and there is an increased risk associated with frequent high volumes of loading, as seen in the workplace 34 . The degree to which one is susceptible to mechanical “overuse” could be influenced by genetic differences.…”
