Objective: This study was aimed to define the clinical and demographic findings of psoriasis in childhood. Methods: In this retrospective study, the data from 64 children with psoriasis admitted at the our dermatology clinic between January 2007 and January 2011 were included whose data were fully. Results: Of the patients, 37 (57.8%) were boys and 27 (42.2%) were girls. Mean age of the children was 10.08 ±3.98 years (3-16). In 10 (15%) cases, a positive family history was detected. The most frequent localizations at onset were trunk (46.9%), scalp (28.1%), knee-elbow (10.9%) and extremities (7.9%), respectively. The most commonly seen clinical types were plaque (68.8%), guttate (20.3%), palmoplantar (9.4%), pustular (1.6%), respectively. Nine children had nail involvement. Out of all patients, 21.9% had upper respiratory tract infections and 9.4% had emotional stres. Four cases were diagnosed with depression. Of the cases, two cases were on non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication, and 4 of them were on antibiotics. Systemic treatments were given to 21.9% of the cases besides topical treatments. Conclusion:The epidemiological studies of psoriasis during childhood period for different countries have been reported. In this study, the ratio shows differences when compared to those previous studies. There are few epidemiologic studies for Turkey. We believe that further epidemiological studies including large number of patients' groups will contribute the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Ülkemizden bildirilen az sayıda epidemiyolojik çalışma mevcuttur. Daha geniş hasta gruplarını içeren çalışmalarla sağlanacak verilerin hastalığın tanı ve tedavisine katkıda bulunacağını düşünmekteyiz.

<p>The clinico-epidemiological data of 276 childhood psoriasis were studied. The mean age was 7.64 years (range 1 day to 15 years). There was no complain of any discomfort in 198 cases. Itching was present in 67 cases and burning in 11 cases. Plaque psoriasis was the most common type (68.8%) followed by guttate (18.8%). Erythrodermic and pustular psoriasis were found in 2.2% and 1.5% cases. Scalp was the most frequently affected site (75.36%) followed by extensors of extremities (41.3%), trunk (37.7%), palm and/or sole (13.0%) and diaper area (11.6%). Nail involvement was found only in 8%, joint was affected in 3.6% and only 2.2% children with psoriasis were erythrodermic. In Bangladeshi children with psoriasis, plaque is the most common type and scalp is the mostly affect site. Nail and joint involvement is less common. Pustular and erythrodermic psoriasis is rare.</p>

Pruritus is a frequent but often unrecognized and underestimated symptom in patients with psoriasis. The underreporting may be due to lower frequency and reduced intensity of pruritus compared to other pruritic diseases such as atopic eczema or uremic pruritus, as well as impairment of psychosocial well-being caused by e.g. depression, social withdraw and secretiveness. Recent studies show pruritus being more prevalent in psoriasis, especially plaque-type psoriasis, than previously believed and severely affecting patients' quality of life. The assessment of pruritus and its associated effects is a significant component of clinical management of psoriasis. The presented suggest we should not underestimate pruritus in psoriasis and must consider this symptom in planning therapy.

Abstract: The disparity in familial distribution may point to genetic differences between the two groups. Further studies to evaluate this difference in familial distribution may contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
