Investigation of the Dynamic Characteristics of a Piezohydraulic Actuator

Abstract: A piezohydraulic actuator is a hybrid device consisting of a hydraulic pump driven by piezo stacks, that is coupled to a conventional hydraulic cylinder via a set of fast-acting valves. Because the performance of the actuator is strongly related to the pumping frequency, a good understanding of the dynamics of the system is essential for designing a highefficiency actuator. This article describes the development of a frequency domain model to quantify the dynamics of a piezohydraulic hybrid actuator. The analy… Show more

“…Thus, their frequency characteristics are more complex due to resonances associated with the hydraulic cylinder volume and the piping connections which may cause pressure reflections. Some researchers have successfully modeled these fluid line dynamics using fluid transmission line models to predict frequency response of the entire system [24].…”

“…A no-load velocity of 30.5 mm/s was achieved, and the blocked force was 155.7 N at a pumping frequency of 300 Hz. In addition, many researchers (Chaudhuri et al, 2009; Cadou and Zhang, 2003; Ellison, 2005; John et al, 2008; Sirohi et al, 2005; Tan et al, 2005) have developed actuators using smart materials.…”

“…With liquid medium converting and delivering power, several kinds of cylinder systems driven by piezostack pump are under development based on the frequency rectification principle (Nasser and Leo, 2000). The developed hydraulic cylinder system are called piezohydraulic actuators (Cadou and Zhang, 2003;Lindler and Anderson, 2003;Sirohi and Chopra, 2003;Sirohi et al, 2005;John et al, 2009), piezohydraulic motors (Kan et al, 2008a;Tang et al, 2009), or piezohydraulic pumps directly Lynch, 1999, 2000;Oates and Lynch, 2001). In this article, they are called entirely piezohydraulic actuators.…”
