The aim of the study was to modify and evaluate the method of management of pancreatic juice and bile secretions in sheep in chronic experiment. Experiment was performed on 12 adult male Corriedale sheep of 54 ± 2.4 kg body weight, fi tted with two biomedical silicone catheters in the common bile duct according to the method described by Kato and Young (Kato et al., 1999) and our modifi cation duodenal cannula. Duodenal cannula was equipped with silicone valve in the basement part to prevent secretions backfl ow.Except the collection time, animals were freely moving in the individual pens and all secretions were returned to duodenum by means of constructed device. During all experimental treatments secretion volume of pancreatic juice was from 11.7 to 34.8 ml·h -1 . Modifi cation of Kato and Young method allows extending the period of animals use even up to more than 6 months. Moreover, it positively impacts animals welfare by reducing time spending in the metabolic cages, and saves labour expenses.

RESUMO.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da utilização de três fontes de proteína: uréia (UR), farinha de penas (FPE) e farelo de glúten de milho (FGM) sobre a digestão ruminal, intestinal e total do amido em bovinos. Utilizaram-se três bovinos da raça Holandês Preto e Branco, castrados, fistulados no rúmen e duodeno, distribuídos em um delineamento experimental quadrado latino 3 x 3. Não houve efeito da fonte protéica (P> 0,05) sobre os parâmetros de digestão avaliados com relação à matéria seca, bem como a composição química microbiana e pH ruminal. A dieta UR apresentou maior produção ruminal de amônia seguida pelas dietas FGM e FPE (P<0,05). A eficiência microbiana aparente e verdadeira foi maior para a dieta FGM (P<0,05) e semelhante para as dietas UR e FPE. Não houve efeito das fontes protéicas sobre a digestibilidade intestinal do amido. O coeficiente de digestibilidade total (%) do amido não apresentou diferença significativa, embora a digestão total do amido (g/dia) tenha sido maior (P<0,05) para as dietas UR e FPE.Palavras-chave: amido, fonte protéica, proteína by-pass, ruminantes.ABSTRACT. Effects of diet protein source on starch digestion in cattle. The effect of three protein sources, urea (UR), feather meal (FM) and corn gluten meal (CGM) on ruminal, intestinal and total starch digestion in cattle was evaluated. Three Holstein steers implanted with ruminal and duodenal cannulae, in a 3x3 Latin square design, were used. Protein source (p>0.05) did not affect dry matter evaluations, chemical microbial composition and ruminal pH. UR diet showed highest ruminal ammonium production, followed by CGM and FM diets (P<0.05). The apparent and true microbial efficiency was higher in CGM diet (P<0.05) and identical to UR and FM diets. Protein source did not affect intestinal digestibility starch. Total digestibility coefficient (%) of starch failed to show any significant difference, albeit total digestion of starch (g/day) was higher (P<0.05) in UR and FM diets.
