Insolvency of Brazilian Electricity Distributors: A Dea Bootstrap Approach

Abstract: Abstract. This study investigates the financial and operational indicators that explain the insolvency of Brazilian electricity distributors, using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) bootstrap approach. The Wagner and Shimshak (2007) stepwise procedure was used to select the variables that had the greatest impact on average efficiency estimated by DEA in the construction of an inefficient frontier. Through a second stage analysis, the Simar and Wilson (2007) bootstrapped truncated regression analyzed contextual… Show more

“…Based on this study, the authors propose to conduct research on, for example, the digitisation and adoption of IFRS into national accounting systems, which is also addressed by Závodný and Procházka (2023). Another possible direction of research could be the impact of the accounting techniques used on the predictive ability of subsequent financial analyses (Scalzer et al 2018) or the impact of tax regulation on selected reporting items, for example, the impact of tax support of national economies on R&D (Černíková and Hyblerová 2021). The above studies by renowned authors provide inspiration for further issues that can be further addressed in the comparison of the Czech and Brazilian accounting and reporting systems.…”

“…Previous empirical research has explored the financial distress efficiency of firms. For illustration, Scalzer et al [16] analyzed which financial indicators can predict financial distress, considering a sample of sixty companies from the electricity sector. Additionally, Wanke et al [17] studied the Malaysian dual banking system's efficiency by assessing financial distress.…”

“…Scalzer et al (2018), investigated the efficiency of financial and operational indicators that explain the insolvency of Brazilian electricity distributors, using a DEA model. In Stage 1 they used DEA and Stage 2 they developed a Bootstrap truncated regression (proposed by Simar and Wilson, 2007) with environmental variables.…”
