Influences of hyperlipidemia history on stroke outcome; a retrospective cohort study based on the Kyoto Stroke Registry

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough hyperlipidemia is known as a risk factor of stroke, its effects on the outcome are unknown. The aim of the study is to clarify the influences of hyperlipidemia on the stroke early outcome by estimating odds ratio (OR) for sequelae requiring care and hazard ratio (HR) for death.MethodsA total of 12617 stroke patients registered in the Kyoto Stroke Registry with information on a hyperlipidemia history. We compared patients who had hyperlipidemia history and patients who hadn’t. The OR for rema… Show more

“…consistent with previous studies that showed that HFDfed animals developed dyslipidemia (24,25), indicating that hyperlipidemia model mice were successful established. Then, after 4 weeks of HFD, the mice received an HFD supplemented with NO (2.5%), NO (7.5%), or without NO for 6 weeks.…”

“…We analyzed all stroke patients identified from January 1999 to December 2009 inclusive in the entire Kyoto prefecture and registered in the KSR. The details of the KSR have been previously reported (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). Briefly, stroke patients were registered in the KSR in cooperation with all medical institutions belonging to the Kyoto Medical Association (KMA).…”

“…They suggested that the outcome was favorable for patients with a history of hyperlipidemia in terms of both the remaining sequelae and hazard ratio for death. Factors that increase the incidence of the disease could have an influence on the severity of the disease in a favorable way [7]. However, they did not investigate the effects of having a history of hyperlipidemia before stroke on physical function for stroke survivors, and there is insufficient information on the effects of hyperlipidemia on physical activity performance ability following stroke, even though hyperlipidemia promotes atherosclerosis and affects both the brain and heart.…”

“…Elevated cholesterol levels contribute to changes in the arterial endothelial permeability since hyperlipidemia promotes atherosclerosis and is associated with an increased risk of stroke incidence [6]. Recently, one study investigated the influences of hyperlipidemia on the early outcome of stroke by estimating the odds ratio for the sequelae requiring care and hazard ratio for death [7]. They suggested that the outcome was favorable for patients with a history of hyperlipidemia in terms of both the remaining sequelae and hazard ratio for death.…”
