Induction of neutrophil apoptosis by a Bcl-2 inhibitor reduces particulate matter-induced lung inflammation

Abstract: Background. Environmental particulate matter exposure can cause various respiratory problems including aggravated asthma, decreased lung function and increased respiratory symptoms. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying PM-induced lung inflammation are incompletely understood. Effective therapeutic strategies are required.Results. A mouse model of particulate matter-induced lung inflammation was used to identify the pathology and the molecular mechanisms for particulate matter-induced lung inflammation.… Show more

“…Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the two most common respiratory disorders, and they constitute chronic non-specific lung diseases (CNSLD) [1]. COPD and asthma share many phenotype similarities, such as airflow limitation, breathlessness, dyspnea, coughing, wheezing and chronic inflammation [2,3]. Evidence is mounting suggesting that COPD and asthma are complex multifactorial diseases, involving many environmental and genetic components [4,5].…”

“…NALP1 participates in the process of inflammation by activating the secretion of high mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1, UniProt: P09429). Bcl-2 is also associated with particulate matter-induced pneumonia and allergic airway inflammation by regulating the apoptosis process of inflammatory cells [ 62 , 63 ].…”
