In home assessment and management of health and wellness with BeClose™ ambient, artificial intelligence

Abstract: In this proposal, we describe the technology of Wireless Health Interactive, LLC (BeClose.com) and demonstrate the capabilities of the BeClose platform for in home assessment of health and wellness to promote aging-in-place. We describe recent efforts to incorporate ambient, artificial intelligence to contextualize data for recognition of activities of daily living. Finally, we illustrate the potential of the technology regarding the aged demographicas a tool to manage independent living with dementia. This wo… Show more

“…Similarly, athletes living in a smart home may be able to constantly monitor their training and fitness level (Kogias et al 2016). Finally, seniors may be able to stay in their home longer, when domotic devices monitor heart rates (Hanson, Barth, and Silverman 2011).…”

“…Over the past two centuries, disruptive technologies have been the hallmark of the industrial and digital revolutions, with the coming autonomy and AI revolution poised to introduce further social and economic change and stress (Makridakis 2017). AI seeks to replicate human decision making by combining data inputs that are manipulated according to algorithms to fulfill a control strategy (Nilsson 2014), which is applied to a wide range of uses including robotics (Raj and Seamans 2019), transportation (Sadek 2007), autonomous vehicles (AVs; Kreutzer and Sirrenberg 2020;Stone et al 2016), medicine (Hamet and Tremblay 2017), and household applications (Friedland 2019;Hanson, Barth, and Silverman 2011;Kazantsev et al 2012) as well as assistance for the disabled and elderly (Sale 2018). While the AI literature tends to focus on advancing the technology, there are also negative outcomes such as the malicious use associated with digital, physical, and political security (Brundage et al 2018).…”

“…They may be instrumented with accelerometers (Li 2013), piezoelectric sensors (Alwan 2009;Klack et al 2011;Leusmann et al 2011), (capacitive) pressure sensors (Olivier et al 2009;Helal et al 2012;Hoey et al 2011;Stefanov, Bien, and Bang 2004), micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) (Fernandez-Luque et al 2013;Helal et al 2012), or innovative sensors using the near-field imaging principle (reported in Leone, Diraco, and Siciliano 2013), but the solution of a ready-to-be-used pressure-sensitive textile layer (Hanson, Barth, and Silverman 2011;Lauterbach et al 2012), called a presence mat or pressure mat, has been popular since the last years . The same technologies can be used for detecting sofa/bed/chair occupancy (Almudevar et al 2008;Cruz-Sanchez et al 2012;Fernandez-Luque et al 2013;Hilbe et al 2010;Kosse et al 2013;Muñoz et al 2011;Palumbo et al 2014;Suryadevara et al 2013;Raad and Yang 2009;Zhang, Hariz, and Mokhtari 2008).…”

“…We then found frequent item set using the FP-growth algorithm available at the mahout 4 library with 5-grams used as sets. We analyzed patterns for each day of the week for the 2 nd subject and for the 1 st subject we studied patterns for two periods of two months each separated by 4 months between them.…”

“…Assisted Living based on ambient intelligence (Ambient Assisted Living, AAL) is proposed as a way to enable independent living while still giving elders the proper support in cases of disease, disability or emergency [2]. There are many commercial [3,4] and academic [5,6] projects working towards AAL that will enable elders to live independently and safe at their own home. These systems monitor activities of daily living in order to tell routine compliance, or detect some early signs of disease and/or risk situations that should be watched over.…”
